Partnering with an Executive Assistant is the single, highest leverage investment I’ve made in my professional life. A (very long) thread 🧵

Ruthless prioritization always beats “hustle” in my book.
Learned this the hard way in my 20s. Trying to help everyone ends up helping no one.
Consistent, focused execution with a steady hand leads to healthier teams and a happier heart. Always.

What is the #1 job most kids want today?
“It’s social media influencer, next is professional gamer, next is YouTuber… the problem is, you can’t tell kids to follow their dreams when their dreams suck.”
What was the #1 dream for kids in 1971?
To be an astronaut 👨🚀 🌕
“We had just gone to the moon… These guys were fighter pilots, PhD mathematician super men, who were also really good looking and well spoken… the ultimate American hero ideal. For a kid to see that and say ‘that’s what I want to be,’ okay tell the kids to follow their dreams.”

Actually, @60Minutes , the Brooklyn Bridge has a predecessor. The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati completed in 1866. (vs 1883)
We do a disservice to history when we ignore non-coastal history.

“Who were those guys and how the hell did they do it,” said historian David McCullough, amazed by the people who built the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge opened 140 years ago.
McCullough said in 2012, he believes it will stand forever if we take care of it. cbsn.ws/3WyBg3J

Humane design principles are primed to go mainstream for platforms using network effects.
Removing the likes, follows, useless notifications, etc and focused bringing like-minded people together more authentically.
It’s a win for everyone…except a big social.
Matt Hunckler retweeted
Big social is on a decline and I’ve said this before, big social becomes the highways to small social pockets on the web for every need/ interest you could have; creative, tech, news, health and wellness, the arts, education, job searching/ career development, you name it.
Now is a good time to build a good time on the web.
And make no mistake, big social will all have a toll fee to distribute to the masses. The price of admission is up for debate.

We're seeing an exciting new era of online education companies emerge — a mix of CBCs and executive memberships focused on specific niches
We're already seeing it:
👩💼 Chief — for female executives (~0.45% of the US pop) • valued at $1B+
💡 On Deck — for idea-stage founders (<0.1% of the US) • valued at $650M+
👩💻 Reforge — for tech talent (~7% of US pop) • valued at $300M+
📈 Hampton — for VC-backed founders • newly launched by @thesamparr & @jspeiser
🌎 @Climatebase Fellowship — for climate-focused talent
Factors:
• COVID spurred an unprecedented acceleration of people embracing live online education and community
• Proliferation of tools and infrastructure for community and social experiences (Zoom, Slack, Mighty, Circle, etc)
• Proliferation of AI and tools like Canva, etc, lowering barrier for high-quality content creation
• General unbundling of broad social networks; the social internet continues to skew niche overtime
• Best practices (the "playbook") for these models becoming solidified
• The more these kinds of models succeed and grow, demand for them grows due to awareness (WoW marketing), fomo, and desire for belonging
Some of these players are still very much in the "figuring it out" stage. On Deck made some big missteps by hiring too quick and trying to do too many things, and recently laid off over 50% of staff. Word on the street is that Chief has had some issues with scaling. But this is just the beginning, and I believe these players will work out the kinks.
IMO: The ultimate challenge they will grapple with isn't the scalability or value of their products; but rather, their ability to attract customers without relying on expensive paid acquisition.
Exciting times!

One final SXSW point. Cities / regions that made the effort to have a presence were rewarded.
Tulsa House was an absolute success. It was PACKED ALL WEEKEND, and the buzz was real. People left genuinely curious and planning to visit. More cities need to do the same.
Amplify Philly & Midwest House were also winners.

Not me, @McKinsey says tech being too concentrated in SF and NYC cause a lack of representation in tech.
The more tech moves out of coastal areas, the better it is for all of us, including coastal areas.
