Whenever you hear all this macho warrior bullshit, remember that a modest, charitable Kiwi and a vegetarian spiritualist who believed in fairies were instrumental in winning the Battle of Britain.

The Soviets received 23 Hampden bombers in September 1942, following a dangerous flight from Britain to northern Russia. They were used as torpedo bombers in the Arctic until late 1943. They achieved some successes, but at a high cost. 12 of the Hampdens were lost in combat.

For anyone interested, I made a Meredith-effect calculator based on the original 1935 paper. You can change the input conditions and see how much drag (or thrust!) the design will make, both at the design point and off-condition. meredith-effect.netlify.app/ Great post, and a terrific book by Peter Spring!

(If anyone replies with F-104, please can you save me time by pasting: The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter doesn't count as a T-tail because its horizontal stabilator is mounted partway up the vertical fin, rather than at the very top. Thanks.)

"A Dambusters/Finding Nemo prequel mashup. When the Möhne Dam was breached, a torrent of water rushed through the valley. For European brown trout Waltraud & Dieter, the flood changed everything. For the first time in years, the barrier that had separated them was gone."

🇬🇧 In 1936, the RAF had just 8,000 tonnes of aviation fuel in reserve — around 10 days of wartime supply, or just 1 day at peak consumption. (Source: researchgate.net/publication…) Photo: airwolfhound
