SC. Pheroze Nowrojee, a previous recipient of the prestigious ICJ Kenya Jurist of the Year Award (JOYA), has been recognised by the National Heroes Council for his outstanding contributions to Kenya’s democratic and constitutional reforms. His legacy in defending human rights, advancing multiparty democracy, championing constitutional reform and promoting accountability through medical forensics remains an important part of Kenya’s pursuit of justice and the rule of law. We celebrate his enduring contribution to justice, constitutionalism and human rights in Kenya. #MashujaaDay #JoyAwards
Is this really a Happy Mashujaa Day? As Kenya celebrates its heroes, we must confront an uncomfortable question: can we truly celebrate our heroes while the rights they fought for remain under threat? Political goonism, violence, intimidation, enforced disappearances and restrictions on civic space continue to test our commitment to constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law. Our heroes fought for freedom, dignity and justice. Honouring them means defending these ideals, not merely remembering them. As we approach the 2027 General Election, we must reject political violence, demand accountability and protect every Kenyan’s right to speak, assemble and participate freely. A truly happy Mashujaa Day must be reflected in the Kenya we build: a country where rights are protected, justice prevails, and no one lives in fear. #MashujaaDay #HumanRights #RuleOfLaw

POLICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN AFRICA: When Borders Become Barriers to Rights Launched on Wednesday, during the ongoing 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Dakar, Senegal, the October 2026 edition of Police and Human Rights in Africa features a contribution by ICJ Kenya Executive Director Demas Kiprono on the role of judicial bodies and administrative authorities in preventing the misuse of migration laws. Demas examines the growing weaponisation of immigration and border-control laws across Eastern Africa to target human rights defenders, opposition figures, lawyers, journalists and refugees. “Across Eastern Africa, a troubling trend is emerging. Immigration and border-control laws, designed to regulate the entry and stay of non-citizens, are increasingly being weaponised to suppress dissent and curtail civic space.” He highlights the critical role of judicial oversight, constitutional safeguards and regional accountability in preventing the misuse of immigration powers and protecting fundamental freedoms. Read his full contribution in the October 2026 edition of Police and Human Rights in Africa. #ACHPR89 #HumanRights #RuleOfLaw

Thrilled to contribute to "Police and Human Rights" — launched this week by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (@achpr_cadhp), published by ACHPR in conjunction with the Danish Institute on Human Rights (DIHR) and @APCOF! My article, "The role of judicial bodies/administrative authorities in preventing policing of migration," examines how migration law is being misused across the region to suppress civic space — and how the judiciary has interpreted and adjudicated these cases in the past, and what lies ahead. drive.google.com/file/d/1i1O… 📖 Read it in English (p.8), French (p.17), and Arabic. #PoliceAndHumanRights #ACHPR #HumanRights #Migration #CivicSpace #AccessToJustice

“We continue to see political party lists that do not comply with inclusion requirements for women, young people and persons with disabilities.” Demas Kiprono, Executive Director of the International Commission of Jurists – Kenya (ICJ-Kenya), speaking during the Consultative Meeting with Civil Society Organisations on Safeguarding Human Rights, Civic Space and Women’s Participation Ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election, highlighted gaps in compliance with political party nomination and inclusion requirements. His presentation on Election Disputes Management examined mechanisms for resolving nomination disputes, electoral complaints and petitions, drawing attention to instances where women, young people and persons with disabilities face exclusion from political party lists. He further explored challenges arising from delayed dispute resolution processes, limited access to timely electoral justice, electoral violence and inadequate accountability for electoral offences. The discussion underscored the need for effective enforcement of inclusion requirements, accessible legal remedies and stronger institutional accountability to safeguard equitable political participation ahead of 2027. @CREAWKenya @thekhrc @ICJKenya #2027GE #WomenInLeadership #CRAWNTrust
