I’m very pleased to report that I’ll have the pleasure of talking about BERT and other recent advances in #NLProc and their applications on legal content at @CodeXStanford in April. It’ll also be jolly nice to see @jamesondempsey and @tweetatpablo!

Such a delight to be back at @thebarcouncil #BarConf
We are keen to learn from the Bar what @TheICLR and @ICLRanD can do to make your lives easier - come say hi 👋
If you’re going to #BarConf be sure to swing round to say hello to us in the exhibition room. We’re in “research mode” looking for ways in which we can ensure that ICLR is well place to supply the Bar with what it needs from a modern law reporting service.

Permitting myself a #humblebrag, there is nothing like using a tool you’ve built yourself to build a new tool. It’s like being Bear Grylls without the bit where you eat a snake’s head or a spider’s arse.
Replying to @DanHLawReporter @alexgsmith
The extraction of the parenthetical candidates mainly hinges on really good sentence segmentation. Blackstone’s segmenter and NER pipe is providing the muscle on this bit.

We have a ton of data at @ICLRanD that could be used for this sort of task and WE WILL NEVER, EVER go there. Predictive technologies for criminal sentencing are in the same phantom zone as predictive military target selection.
Dear ML and #NLProc researchers: Just because you can cast something as a seq2seq problem DOES NOT MEAN you should.
I'll go further: If you're ever tempted to do something like this, you need to take three giant steps back and ask yourself "why"? >>

#Sheffield #Legal/#Tech/#LegalTech/#Other people! Join us for a #charity breakfast for @SupportTCourt discussing how tech can help with #A2J! Hear from Lord Briggs of @UKSupremeCourt, @BamLegal, @EmilyMacLoud @SpeechToJustice, @ICLRanD, @DanHLawReporter! bit.ly/2C4mzNy
Really pleasing to see that the #Blackstone project is gaining interest as far afield as Australia. It obviously goes without saying that we’d be delighted to collaborate with @SupremeCourtQLD! github.com/ICLRandD/Blacksto… @spacy_io ⚫️ #NLProc
Just had great meeting with @richyvk and others at @SupremeCourtQLD re collaboration on @ICLRanD #Blackstone project

So, lawyers are crap at technology and change? I was delighted by a little story from @johnlsheridan yesterday about Charles Goldfarb who held a JD from Harvard. Turns out we have this lawyer to thank for the basis of a silly little thing called HTML. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Char…
⚫️Blackstone 0.0.13 released!
⭐️ Sentence segmentation protection around case law citations.

We have given some thought to this win/loss issue and I have to say we’re not altogether sure it’s a good idea going down that path

Anyone interested in some statistics on UK Supreme Court litigation?
I've been working on a database extracted from PDFs of Supreme Court judgments (from their website). See the image for an example of what I can get from it now.

Cool things also going on at qnamarkup.org/ and @ICLRanD - I wonder if @ArtificialLawya could be persuaded to put together a list of open source legal tech??

Question for people with a keen eye for well executed UI and UX design: have you seen any really decent implementations of expand/collapse tree navigation of long nested lists? #design

Note that if you’re planning on mucking around with BERT you are definitely going to need acceleration from a GPU. You can get this for free on @GoogleColab or for £ use the Deep Learning AMI on AWS
Had a really interesting chat with @latticecut the other day about fine tuning BERT for downstream tasks in the legal domain. If you’re interested in BERT but are struggling to find a route into it, this is by far the best write up I’ve seen on the subject mccormickml.com/2019/07/22/B…

Quick note on the Blackstone model by @ICLRanD. The current proto model was initialised using @spacy_io’s pretrain command. The model is not valid in the latest spaCy release and will complain about an unknown morphological feature. github.com/ICLRandD/Blacksto…

I'm really enjoying @streamlit.
Built an app in 154 lines of really poorly factored code that uses Blackstone, @spacy_io and @gensim_py to analyse CA (Civ) judgments on @BAILII (in a way that's respectful of their terms of use -- which is very important).

Good morning #legaltech/#lawtech/#legaltechlaw# folk. I’m interested in speaking with people seeking bulk access to structured case law data over a set of well engineered APIs.
