THE YORUBA AND THE MAKING OF MODERN NIGERIA The Yoruba entered the colonial era with important advantages shaped by earlier contact with Christian missionaries, indigenous enterprise and growing access to Western education. Figures such as Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African Anglican bishop, played a significant role in translating the Bible into Yoruba and expanding literacy in the language. These developments helped nurture a growing class of Yoruba lawyers, doctors, journalists, traders and political leaders, particularly in Lagos. By independence in 1960, Yoruba intellectuals and political figures had become influential in Nigeria’s emerging national life. However, independence also brought new challenges of political competition, regional interests and the struggle to build a united nation among its diverse peoples. The geopolitical lesson: education, language, commerce and institutions can shape a people’s influence within a changing political order.
