Warnings precede disasters, yet resources arrive too late. At the 2nd Eastern Africa Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Action in Mombasa, IGAD’s Executive Secretary H.E @DrWorkneh urged a shift from early warning to early action, backed by predictable funding, strong institutions, and empowered communities. Success means protecting lives before disaster strikes.

Too often, warnings come before disasters, but resources arrive only after the damage is done. This must change.
Today in Mombasa, at the 2nd Eastern Africa Dialogue Platform on Anticipatory Action, officially opened by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, H.E. @Kipmurkomen, I called for a decisive shift from early warning to early action, backed by predictable financing, stronger institutions and empowered communities.
Our success must be measured not by the disasters we respond to, but by the lives and livelihoods we protect before they strike.

Media Network Launched to Champion Resilient Food Systems
The #IGAD Media and Influencer Training on DACAS and the IGAD Fertilizer and Soil Health Hub concluded today in Nairobi, 🇰🇪, with the official launch of the FSRP Media and Influencers Network.
Over three days, participants produced articles, radio segments, videos and social media content on soil health and climate advisory services, refining them through a review of technical accuracy, sourcing and audience relevance. The training closed with the adoption of the Network’s Terms of Reference and the nomination of Regional Champions.
Through this Network, IGAD is building a lasting partnership with journalists and influencers to advance the CAADP Kampala Declaration and food security across the region.

H.E. Ambassador Moussa A. Meigague, Director of IGAD’s Health and Social Development Division, welcomed a delegation from the International Labour Organization (ILO) for a technical meeting on the EU-funded Free Movement Protocol project.
The meeting reviewed progress in project implementation and identified areas requiring further attention, including timely feedback on ILO reports, compliance with IGAD policies and procedures, and addressing implementation bottlenecks.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination and collaboration to advance the project’s objectives and support free movement and labour mobility across the IGAD region.

🤝 Handing over the baton: For three and a half years, the World Food Programme (@WFPafrica) held the lantern high. As co-chair of the Regional Technical Working Group on Anticipatory Action, it helped light the path from early warning to early action, setting up the structures and steadying the ship of the Anticipatory Action (AA) Eastern Africa chapter, and hosting the first Eastern Africa Dialogue Platform (EADP). Through changing seasons, its steady hand turned foresight into readiness, and partnership into purpose.
Now the page turns. As we look ahead to the second EADP (EADP2), a new chapter begins, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (@IFRCAfrica ) takes up the reins.
On behalf of the more than 100 members of the TWG, we thank WFP for its shared leadership and the bridges it has built. To IFRC, we extend a warm welcome and wish it wisdom, strength and success as it carries the baton forward.

From Knowledge to Stories: Day 2 of the FSRP Media and Influencer Training
The #IGAD Media and Influencer Training on DACAS and the IGAD Fertilizer and Soil Health Hub continued today in Nairobi, 🇰🇪
Participants explored how journalism and influencer content can shape public debate and support accountability, alongside best practices in verification, credible sourcing and clear communication. Working in groups, they then began producing their own content on soil health and climate advisory services.
Through these efforts, IGAD is building a regional community of communicators for food systems resilience.

IGAD, Kenya, Ethiopia & Somalia convened the Hanaano Technical Government Advisory Committee (TGAC) meeting on 21–22 October, 2026 in #Machakos, Kenya, to review Phase I achievements and chart the way forward for Phase II.
Building on gains in nutrition, WASH and livelihoods, Phase II will strengthen cross-border coordination, evidence-based policies, access to nutrition and health services, and sustainable livelihoods to prevent childhood wasting and build resilient communities across the Mandera Triangle.

#IGAD, alongside experts from National Quality Control Laboratories in Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia, has begun a five-day assessment of the Ethiopia Food and Drug Authority (EFDA)’s Quality Control Laboratory to assess its readiness to serve as a Regional Reference Laboratory.
The assessment will evaluate laboratory capacity, quality management systems, technical expertise and operational readiness, identifying gaps and priority actions to strengthen regional testing services and regulatory collaboration.
The Director @IGADHealthS Amb. Moussa @Meigague emphasized that the exercise is a practical step towards building a connected regional quality-assurance system that protects public health and strengthens confidence in health products.
Supported through IGAD’s @WorldBankGroup-funded #HEPRR-MPA, the initiative aims to enhance regulatory reliance, improve detection of substandard and falsified medical products, and expand access to quality-assured health products across the region.
