139 health, human rights etc organisations in 53 countries call on NZ Govt to stop repeal of smokefree laws. "Repealing ... will have only one winner – the tobacco industry – & will firmly establish an ethos of putting corporate profit over public health."

The new coalition govt in #Aotearoa #NewZealand plans to repeal the smokefree law, including reducing nicotine in cigarettes to make them non-addictive. HUGE projected declines in smoking in NZ will be forsaken (tinyurl.com/2frnamxe) so that the govt can cut taxes (seriously!)

Our commentary (tinyurl.com/29vjnvhv) also states that a more effective method to ban menthols would be to ban menthol as an additive (or additives) rather than relying on a non-specific concept of “characterizing flavor”. Here is our argument, Part 1: 8/10

BONUS public health impact of a US menthol cigarette ban: If it leads to 1.33M fewer smokers, then there would be 3.777 BILLION fewer cigarette butts littered in a single year. Unbelievable? Check out the step-by-step calculations here:

Importantly: in both Canada & Netherlands: NO increase in illicit purchasing:

Netherlands: tinyurl.com/bdhcx5ud
However in NL, many used “menthol add-ons” (flavor cards, roll-your-own filters, etc.). FDA should ban these. 6/10

In the US, Black/African Americans who smoke are more likely to smoke menthols (~80%) than others (~30%). That means that a US menthol ban would have a substantial positive equity effect. This is from the 2021 announcement of @FDATobacco’s intent to ban menthols. 4/10
