A common objection to direct democracy is 'the public will vote for lower taxes and higher spending.'
Yet Switzerland has managed their spending and debt better than any representative democracy.
π¨π The Fiscal Shield π‘οΈ
In Switzerland they installed a debt break, a constitutional rule introduced in 2003, following approval by approximately 85% of Swiss voters in a 2001 referendum.
Its purpose was and is to prevent the federal government from continually spending more than it can sustainably afford, passing the burden of debt to future generations.
The principle is straightforward: government spending must be aligned with revenue over the economic cycle.
This allows flexibility during recessions and exceptional emergencies, while requiring financial discipline in normal economic conditions.
Rather than relying on politicians to restrain borrowing voluntarily, the debt brake establishes a binding framework for managing public money responsibly.
The results have been significant. Between 2003 and 2019, Switzerland reduced its federal debt by approximately CHF 27 billion.
Lower debt also helped limit interest costs, leaving more public money available for other priorities.
Academic research has found evidence that the debt brake contributed to improved fiscal outcomes, although economic growth and other policy decisions have also played a part.
The Swiss model demonstrates how constitutional safeguards and democratic accountability can work together to protect public finances.
Its central lesson is that governments should retain the flexibility to respond to genuine crises, but should not routinely finance todayβs spending by leaving tomorrowβs taxpayers with the bill.
If the UK had more #DirectDemocracy maybe it wouldnβt have 3 trillion of debt. Something to learn here from the Swiss.

Every resource that a society devotes to building housing is one that cannot be used for other purposes. I mean, Econ 101 anyone?
What if we'd rather do other things with our (limited) wealth than build houses for immigrants?
Bit random, but a moral lesson from history:
People who are remembered fondly tend to be those who were merciful, kind and just.
Those who are remembered as villains were ruthless, cruel and unjust.

Another flaw in the incel discourse is the idea that women are a) shameless whores AND b) ruthlessly filtering out all but the top 0.1% of men. I mean, which is it?

As a man who has spent a lot of time around women (at work and socially), while there are some kernels of truth to the incel misogynistic take, overall it just doesn't match reality.
Tons of women have average partners.

It's funny how there's a difference between the affected way an upper-middle class Pakeha will say 'MΔori' and an actual Maori on the street will say it.
If we are going to go back to trad right views on nationalism, let us not forget that they tend to lead to wars between nations.

Genuine q to the believers in 'white privilege': why would any white person publicly saying 'I'm proud to be white' immediately get cancelled?
The way to reach white liberals on immigration is to just plainly show them the future projections for their preferred policies, and remind them that there is no endpoint.
Not trying to countersignal anyone but actual white nationalism needs to be acceptable to white liberals.
