As I paid my respects to Speaker Hortman, her husband Mark and their dog, Gilbert, I felt the raw grief of so many Minnesotans.
A political assassination is an attack on our State’s heart, no matter our politics or place. President Biden’s attendance today acknowledged that truth and demonstrated humanity over partisanship.
I’m a Republican, but I’m a Minnesotan first, and I encourage President Trump and other GOP leaders to pay their respects and attend the funeral tomorrow.
Our state is shattered, anxious, and in need of healing. This isn’t about votes or power, rather honoring a life dedicated to service and showing Minnesotans we can-and we must-rise above disrespect and division. Tomorrow can represent a new path forward, but it takes all of us being there.
