MERCOSUR’s Common External Tariff (CET) and Argentina 🇦🇷
MERCOSUR (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) is a customs union. Members must apply the same external tariff on most imports from outside the bloc. The average CET is roughly 10–12% 👎
The CET keeps Argentina behind a protectionist wall. Leaving would allow Argentina to open unilaterally, cut costs, and pursue independent trade deals—the freer-trade path several economists argue is better for long-term growth.
🩸 How it hurts Argentina
- Imports become more expensive: Capital goods, intermediate inputs, machinery, and many consumer products from outside the bloc face high tariffs. This raises production costs for Argentine industry and makes everyday goods costlier for consumers.
- Less competitive exports: Higher input costs reduce the competitiveness of Argentine products abroad. Companies pay more for parts and equipment than competitors in freer-trade countries.
- Policy handcuffs: Argentina cannot unilaterally lower tariffs below the CET (except for a limited list of national exceptions). Even under a pro-trade government, the common tariff blocks deeper liberalization.
- Limited flexibility: Temporary reductions require MERCOSUR approval and are restricted. The system favors protection over openness.
🚀 What leaving MERCOSUR would mean
Argentina would regain full control of its trade policy. It could:
- Set its own (much lower) tariffs on imports from anywhere in the world.
- Negotiate bilateral free-trade agreements freely (with the US, EU, others) without needing bloc consensus.
- Import cheaper inputs and goods, lowering costs for businesses and consumers.
- Compete more effectively in global markets by reducing the cost of production.
Main trade-off: Preferential access to Brazil (Argentina’s largest regional partner) would be lost or renegotiated. Sectors highly dependent on the Brazilian market (especially autos and parts) would face adjustment costs. Most other trade could be reoriented toward freer markets.
This is a direct consequence of these criminals retaining power: using the money of the Brazilian people to help carry out fraud in other countries in the region. Not in our watch.
🇧🇷 If the fraud succeeds, Brazil will pay a heavy price. My thoughts are with the Brazilians who opposed it—but Argentina and the U.S. will not watch as the region’s largest economy slides into dictatorship. Those days are over.
🇪🇸 Pedro Sánchez has just admitted that he will commit fraud.
¡Gran victoria de @LulaOficial!
Lo que ha pasado en Brasil, pasará en España.
La remontada del progresismo global acaba de comenzar.
Mr President @JMilei, let’s leave Mercosur.
🚨 BREAKING: Argentina’s Fiscal Innocence II becomes operational today.
The simplified Income Tax declaration now has no income or asset limits, it removes the old $1B income / $10B wealth barriers.
I have never seen such a fraud. Voting data began to be reported before the polls had closed.
🇦🇷🇺🇾🇵🇾 If fraud goes through, Brazil should face suspension from Mercosur.
It would end the failed customs union.
The only way for the corrupt Lula to win is through fraud. Make no mistake: there will be fraud, but it won’t be enough for him.
🚨🇧🇷 BREAKING:
Brazil has EXTENDED voting until 7PM
Minister Zanin, of the Supreme Federal Court:
"Considering the seriousness of the facts narrated, which came to the attention of the Supreme Court, and given the evident urgency in the measure, I determine an extension for two hours, until 7 p.m., Brasilia time, of the closure of the receipt of votes in all sections throughout Brazil."
Lula's coalition filed a petition with a request for an emergency injunction this afternoon, requesting the extension of the voting time until 7 pm, in municipalities affected by public transport problems.
The lawyers of Lula's campaign say that reports of failures in the transport of voters multiplied throughout the day in several regions of the country.

Milei is taking on the political, union, journalistic, and business establishment. All this while fixing the economy, forging strong international alliances, attracting investment, and promoting libertarianism across the globe.
A true leader and a hero.
This guy is the most dangerous president in the European Union.
He has no scruples, and if he wins, he’ll show his true colors.
Either he is stopped now, or there will be no more elections in Spain.
It is shameful that the president of a country as great as Brazil would say the outrageous things he says about Argentina. In Argentina, we don’t eat donkey meat, Lula. We are the country with the highest per capita beef consumption in the world.
