In #policecustody the custody officer makes an individual assessment of vulnerability, taking into account behaviour, communication, and any known or disclosed needs. This includes factors that may impair their understanding or communication.

That has been the case for many prisoners on release since I first encountered the English & Welsh probation services in 1973 although it never applied to early released prisons until the daft system of ACR's was bought in by Conservatives in 1991 (note well @WillCalverleyUK )

Protecting autonomy – a case study in effective policing (and legal literacy): mentalcapacitylawandpolicy.o…
Poignant reflection on mental health services … the conditioning of professional staff ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
I may say something controversial.
You can't run mental health services that are overstretched and overwhelmed for years, where clinicians are forced to prioritise high risk, raise the bar for entry and cut anything seen as a "luxury", and then expect junior doctors to develop a high standard of knowledge and skill.
What they learn instead is how to manage risk and reject referrals.
In a system like this, a lot is treated as a “luxury”:
• the therapeutic value of the relationship itself, and of contact with a team (before, it was the status quo. Now patients are not kept open without a clear “intervention”, while the relationship itself can be the intervention)
• psychotherapy skills integrated in practice
• a psychiatrist seeing a patient when there is no medication need
One of the most frustrating phrases I heard in my NHS consultant years was: "I'm not going to prescribe for this patient, so there's no point in seeing them."
At first I thought this came from more biologically oriented colleagues. But when resources are this limited, even caring, formulation-focused psychiatrists end up working the same way.
Trainees learn that this is normal. Few people have time to add: "It shouldn't be like this. It's because of a lack of resources."
So, as generations change, expertise narrows to risk and caseload management.
The RCPsych is clearly aware of this, and the push to bring formulation into training is a good step against the current. My worry is that it becomes another tick-box: something to evidence during training, before trainees go back to copying what they see consultants do on a daily basis.
Psychotherapy training is often treated the same way: do your two cases, attend Balint, get signed off, move on.
For five years I taught psychiatrists in the West Midlands how to integrate psychotherapy and lifestyle skills into everyday practice. The idea is that these skills are not a box to tick, but tools to use in every clinical encounter. Not something to have signed off and forget about. But courses won't change much.
What's needed is less pressure on the system, so that the people who care still have the space to pass on what good care looks like.
P.S. This isn't about any specific trust. It's about a trend across mental health services.

BBC emergency protocol:
“100 people in the BBC will run a emergency radio studio.
“It will have secure lines of communication not dependent on the internet, and fuel, water and food to ensure it can operate without resupply for at least three days.”

Post Office - did they conspire to pervert the course of justice ? @PostOffInquiry @PostOffice @nickwallis
THE COVER-UP GETS A STAGE
@nickwallis has spent years documenting what was done to subpostmasters. Next Wednesday in Cranleigh he talks about what might be a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Worth hearing. Tickets in his post.
I’ve seldom felt so frustrated - supporting a young man who needs a BSL interpreter to attend police custody on a Friday night … what is the chance ?!?

There are still more pieces of work by John Cooper but I'm going to close this week with "The Anchorage" by him which was painted in Appledore in 1935, judging by the fact of Braunton Lighthouse in the background. It is in the collection @LeedsMuseums #JohnCooper #EastLondonGroup

How many young disabled people will die from suicide?
Exclusive interview with Pat McFadden in Denmark:
+ DWP chief says Britain’s welfare state needs a ‘big reset’ ahead of publication of two major reports into ‘Neets’ and disability benefits
+ Labour has to "turn the page" on last year’s welfare fiasco but Parliament will “have to decide” in 2027 on proposals for reforms
+ A "distinct system" for young people has its "merits"
+ Looking at lessons from Danish ‘fleksjob’ which helps disabled people and those suffering from ill-health with government subsidised jobs
+ Will make the case for investment in job support in spending review

As we’re being tagged in posts regarding complaints about barrister behaviour, we want to clarify that, as the Bar Council, we are the representative body for the profession.
Regulation of barristers is delegated to the Bar Standards Board (BSB). Reports to the BSB are confidential.

Mental health lawyers, who do public work in MH Tribunals and in other ways, are still being paid at the same rate as they were in 1996?
Imagine if nurses, AMHPs, police and others hadn’t had a SINGLE pay rise in 30yrs?!

2.5 years on, still nothing from #fujitsu @liambyrnemp. No Donation either to Lost Chances.
Conservative MP Kevin Hollinrake says the #PostOfficeScandal will cost the taxpayer around £1,000,000,000
He then says that Fujitsu will pay a proportion of this
Given that Fujistsu are responsible for this, why is the tax payer contributing? Shouldn't Fujitsu pay the full compensation bill?
