Today’s “Odd Tank” is the 🇫🇷French ‘AMX ELC bis’ Developed in the mid 1950’s to the early 1960’s, the AMX ELC bis was a prototype Light Combat Vehicle designed to be airlifted to assist airborne units. It would be crewed by only two and they would both be seated inside the turret. While mobile, the turret had to be locked in the forward position. The ELC Bis would not be adopted with only one example of this particular design being produced, however there were other prototypes. The main armament is a 90mm D.915 gun.

Earlier this year, members of the Artillery Corps conducted a 105mm live firing exercise in the Glen of Imaal, Co. Wicklow. The exercise saw Private soldiers qualify as Gunners within the Corps, while personnel also qualified as Fire Support Team (FST) Commanders, strengthening the Defence Forces’ ability to deliver and coordinate effective fire support. #ÓglaighnahÉireann #DefendOurState #IrishDefenceForces

🇫🇷 AMX-10P TTB 140 (SPAAG) Developed in the early 1980s, the AMX-10P TTB 140 combined the French AMX-10P infantry fighting vehicle chassis with SAMM’s privately developed TTB 140 turret. Designed to engage low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and lightly armored vehicles, the system was also proposed for the Panhard ERC 6×6. Despite its versatility and advanced fire-control equipment, no orders were placed, leaving it a prototype. Weighing an estimated 16–18t, the vehicle had a three-man crew and was powered by a 276hp Hispano-Suiza HS 115-2 diesel engine, giving it a top speed of 65 km/h. Its primary armament was a 40mm Bofors L/70B autocannon, capable of firing APFSDS, HE, and proximity-fuzed HE ammunition, supported by a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun. The cannon could engage lightly armored vehicles at 2,000m and helicopters at 3,000m, with an elevation range of −10° to +50°. Fire-control equipment included a laser rangefinder, day/night sights, thermal imaging, and optical target tracking, with optional stabilization. Turret protection was limited to 12.7mm rounds frontally and 7.62mm rounds all around.
