A significant tornado has impacted northwestern RS this morning. Radar shows that this tornado may have lasted for a considerable time as seen from radar data. A TDS was detected in Palmeira das Missoes, where considerable damage was reported.
Um tornado atingiu a cidade de Santo Augusto, no Noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul, pouco antes das 3h da madrugada deste sábado (7).
📌 Segundo informações da MetSul, a força do fenômeno causou estragos em diversas áreas da cidade, destruindo estruturas, danificando imóveis, destelhando residências e comércios, além de deixar parte da população sem energia elétrica devido aos severos danos provocados na rede de distribuição.

AMAZING news as Missouri officials have just approved funding for a new radar unit in southeastern Missouri!
This new SEMO radar will be in Van Buren, directly in the radar hole you see in red near the bootheel.
This will massively help in severe weather monitoring! #MOwx

NOAA retired the NAM this week. We ported it to the GPU and it's back, better than ever: WOOF-NAM, open source.
- 12 km CONUS, all NAM physics, 24 h forecast in ~20 min on a single RTX 5090 (32 GB).
- 8 GPUs: 6 h in 92 s. Multi-card is bitwise to single card.
- 4 km CONUS, 24 h in under 9 min on 8 GPUs. 3 km nests anywhere on Earth (Europe, Japan, CONUS): 48 h in ~7 min on one card.
SStarts from the NAM analysis or GFS today, IFS open data in the next release. Beside the operational NAM from the same cycle it's hard to tell them apart (pics).
Today it needs one 32 GB card for the full 12 km CONUS; ~15 GB is the target, coming soon.

There is more good news today. I had seen this a day or two ago but now it's confirmed by a notice sent out to Nat'l Weather Service offices directing them to resume timely 2x/day balloon releases. NWS has been on a hiring spree after the ill-advised DOGE cuts. (H/T Alan Gerard).
