🚨 Wayne Rooney reacts to Diego Gómez’s unbelievable halfway-line goal against Crystal Palace! 🗣️ Wayne Rooney: “When I saw Diego Gómez score that goal, I immediately thought, ‘Brilliant finish!’ But then I realised he might have just reminded everyone of a record I would have preferred to keep for a little longer. Apparently, it’s the longest Premier League goal since my effort against West Ham. I was quite happy enjoying that memory without anyone coming along to challenge it! But seriously, what a strike. Scoring from 51 metres is extraordinary, but what impresses me most is the confidence it takes to even attempt something like that. Think about it. You collect the ball, look up, notice the goalkeeper is off his line, and have barely a second to decide what to do. Most players would keep possession or pass to a teammate. Gómez decided he was going to try something special. And the execution was magnificent. It takes more than simply kicking the ball hard. You need the right technique, the right trajectory and enough accuracy to make sure the goalkeeper cannot recover in time. Get any of those details wrong, and you’re probably watching the ball land somewhere in the stands. I know what it feels like to score a goal from that distance. After my goal against West Ham, people kept asking whether I intended to do it. I always found that question amusing. What did they think I was trying to do? Send the ball into the next postcode? Of course, there is always an element of instinct involved, but when you see the goalkeeper out of position, you have to trust yourself enough to take the opportunity. Another thing I loved was the reaction from his teammates. You could see the disbelief on their faces. It’s one thing watching someone score during training, but when a teammate produces something extraordinary in a competitive match, even the players around him need a moment to process what they have witnessed. And Brighton deserve credit for creating an environment where players feel comfortable attempting things like this. They play with confidence, encourage attacking football and give their players the freedom to express themselves. You cannot constantly tell footballers to be adventurous and then criticise them whenever a risky attempt doesn’t work. If every ambitious decision is discouraged, you will never witness moments like this. Of course, not every shot from the halfway line will find the net. Some will end up in the stands, and the manager will probably have something to say about it afterwards! But occasionally, a player produces a moment that leaves an entire stadium speechless. People are already discussing whether this could be the goal of the season, and I completely understand why. There is still a long way to go, but that is certainly the kind of strike that sets an incredibly high standard for everyone else. My advice to Diego? Enjoy every replay, every headline and every conversation about that goal. Because when you score from the halfway line like that, the goalkeeper isn’t the only person who will be having nightmares about it!
