The annual colorectal cancer incidence among US adults aged 45 to 49 surged by 12% from 2019 to 2022, likely due to earlier detection following lowered screening age recommendations. ja.ma/4p0n2X4

According to a study co-led by researchers at MSK and published in @NatureMedicine, a new vaccine shows encouraging early results as a potential ready-made treatment for patients with pancreatic or colorectal cancer.
Unlike individualized cancer vaccines, which are tailored to each patient, ready-made vaccines can be mass-produced and stored for immediate use. The vaccine, ELI-002 2P, targets tumors with mutations (or changes) in the KRAS gene, a driving force in many cancers, and is given after surgery to prevent or delay a return of cancer.
“Having this type of vaccine would make it easier, faster, and less expensive to treat a larger number of patients,” says medical oncologist and pancreatic cancer specialist @EileenMOReilly, who co-led the trial. “This gives hope for people with pancreatic and colorectal cancer who have been out of effective treatments when their disease returns.”

🧑🔬🏅 Dr Carlos Matellan has received the UCD Conway Festival Gold Medal for his efforts to reduce the health risk caused by inflammation in those with gut conditions such as Crohn's disease.
A postdoctoral fellow at the UCD Conway Institute, his anti-inflammatory research aims to prevent the body from damaging itself by causing too much inflammation.
In 2023, Dr Matellan was one of four early-career researchers awarded ‘Medals of Excellence’ by the Irish Research Council - becoming Research Ireland.
👏 Congratulations, Dr Matellan.
