When you keep hearing people insist that AI will be able to "make art," there are times, friends, when you have to tell them that if all they can think about is product instead of process, they have lost their way. I could go on and on about how a work of art moves us precisely because it is a testament of another human being's experience with the great questions, how it consoles our loneliness even as it challenges us, how its sacredness is its attempt at the impossible, how art (like love, like life) is not a puzzle to be solved but a mystery to be lived... But let's just say this: Louis Armstrong was once asked what jazz is. "If you have to ask," he answered, "you'll never know." If you have to ask why the process of human creation is important (and spiritually fulfilling) in a world of computerized creation, you'll never know, at least until you open your heart to the possibility that we're here on this earth to do something other than make money and die.
