Earlier in the week, ministers launched the “Be Ready” campaign, which advises households to stockpile roughly nine litres of bottled water per person, three days of non-perishable food, cash, a torch, a battery or wind-up radio, and other basic supplies so that they can cope with temporary disruptions to power, water, or communications. Officials have linked the advice to risks ranging from severe weather and cyber incidents to the possibility of state-sponsored sabotage, while stressing that the public should remain alert rather than alarmed. The campaign has already prompted a noticeable public response. Wind-up radios have sold out at multiple retailers, with sales reported to have risen as much as fivefold, while Maplin recorded a 284 per cent increase in torch sales and a 106 per cent rise in power banks in the days after the announcement. Specialist preparedness shops saw a sharp spike in orders, and local reports described busy scenes at some supermarkets, including a gridlocked car park and emptied shelves at an Asda in Colchester, as well as queues at Costco stores where shoppers left with large quantities of water and other essentials. Retailers described the government’s rollout as “shambolic,” saying they had received little advance notice and had expected a more low-key campaign, even as ministers continued to urge households to build supplies gradually rather than rush into bulk buying. Mr Streeting used the piece to criticise the previous Conservative government for leaving the Armed Forces underfunded and “hollowed out,” citing low recruitment, delayed equipment programmes, and comments by former Defence Secretary Ben Wallace. He claimed the present Labour administration under Prime Minister Andy Burnham is already delivering the largest sustained rise in defence spending since the end of the Cold War and remains on course to meet NATO targets, pointing to improved recruitment numbers, rising morale, the restart of artillery barrel production in Telford, and the introduction of new armoured vehicles.
