Imagine nationalists parading and holding a rally in Derry demanding the right to parade through the unionist Fountain estate. That is an exact parallel to what the Orangemen & Unionist leadership are demanding. That mindset is *the* issue. It needs to be confronted head on.
LIVE | The cold weather hasn’t deterred crowds from gathering in Portadown’s Watson Street to support Portadown District Lodge’s Parade through the town. The parade has now begun, with 26 bands taking part. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/… belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/…

It seems I have annoyed all the right people with this post- a good thing. Drumcree was a very dangerous cliff-edge moment for this society. Media framing played a huge part in making it happen. That needs investigated, openly discussed & changes made at our public broadcaster

💥NEW: Mary Lou McDonald - Blame for any strike action in Northern Ireland 'lies at the feet of the British Government' 🎥@sinnfeinireland President @MaryLouMcDonald says the blame for any potential strike action in Northern Ireland lies with the British Government. 🎤She told Chief Reporter @jamesgould23 that the Government's "final offer can't be the final offer." Her comments come as Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant meets political party leaders today, with discussions continuing over Stormont's budget crisis. Executive departments have been operating without an agreed budget since the beginning of the financial year in April and are currently restricted to spending up to 95% of last year's funding. Ministers in the devolved power-sharing administration insist they cannot agree a budget for 2026/27 without additional financial support from Westminster. The UK Government has offered an extra £1.5 billion over the next three years in an effort to help balance the books, but Stormont's leaders insist the funding falls short of what is needed. In response, Sir Chris has criticised what he describes as "irresponsible" overspending by devolved ministers. More on-air and online.
⚠️⁉️NEW: Secretary of State arrives at Stormont for party talks amid warnings Northern Ireland faces a "difficult winter" 📍Secretary of State Sir @RhonddaBryant has arrived at Stormont for talks with party leaders as the budget crisis continues. 🎤 Chief Reporter @jamesgould23 has this report from Parliament Buildings. We hear from First Minister @moneillsf, who warns Northern Ireland faces a "difficult winter", describing the financial situation as "dire". Sir Chris Bryant is attempting to break the deadlock, with the Executive insisting it needs more funding from Westminster. The UK Government maintains that its financial offer is substantial, but so far, no agreement has been reached. More on-air and online.

Who chooses the stories? Who chooses the headlines? Who chooses the framing? Who chooses the guests? Who chooses the questions? Drumcree has been fuelled from start to finish by media framing. A major theme needing to be addressed by BBCNI because it tells us something.

I tried to intervene on him to pull him on it but he wouldn’t let me in. Claire Hanna called him out in her speech. Utterly despicable, well done John for calling it out.

I asked Timothy Gaston last night if he’d support a republican parade through Dervock, Broughshane & the Ballykeel area of Ballymena. He would not. Opposing nakedly sectarian & supremacist conduct in a divided society is exactly what leaders should be doing.

I have heard no one, in any party or other organization say that a white paper and a citizens Assembly is all we need. The necessary work will take years. That is why we need to start. I suggest how we might do it in my new book Before the Vote. dcupress.dcu.ie/book/before-…

The absolute desperation-within sections of this society-to remove the First Minister from office is transparently obvious. Go figure.

Delighted to launch @JohnDoyleDCU’s new book ‘Before the Vote: Planning for a United Ireland’ at the Political Studies Association of Ireland conf at University College Cork. The book is not so much an argument for unity as the need to plan for its possibility/probability #PSAI26

SF leader Mary Lou McDonald has called for the “full picture” over any threats to police or Republicans, which could’ve contributed to the decision to ban a Shankill Rd Republican parade, to be made known. A headline you’ll *never* read. It’s a mindset. That is the key issue.

Can we expect Carla and the DUP to take the same line with PSNI risk assessments on loyalist paramilitaries? Riots, bonfires, paramilitary flags, have been left in place due to loyalist paramilitary threats. The garvaghy road protest was entirely peaceful.
Unionists demand answers over claim PIRA 'feelings' were taken into account in PSNI's assessment of Drumcree

The characterisation of the large numbers of people - from diverse backgrounds - who exercised their human rights to protest peacefully and to free expression - in relation to the Garvaghy Road - remains highly problematic. A pause for reflection may be wise.

This piece by @NewtonEmerson in Thursday’s @irish_news is, I think, an important read for the entirety of unionism.
"Unionism has never had a moment quite like Martin McGuinness’s “traitors to Ireland” rebuke to dissident republicans in 2009, a comparison that might seem unfair as so many of the circumstances were different. "However, it is fair in one crucial respect: unionism never tells its hardline fringe to get stuffed, so inevitably the fringe keeps setting the agenda." Read Newton Emerson: tinyurl.com/h6whnskh

"The week of the Fleadh was like the summer of love compared to what the autumn months have brought. "It was a time when Belfast was transformed into a hub of music and culture. When people sang, drank, and danced together in the streets. It was our moment to show ourselves and the rest of the world how much everything has changed and what we’ve created." "This is a fight being picked by the perpetually agitated and antagonistic wing of unionism which, unfortunately for everyone in this place, is a grouping over-represented within the ranks of unionist politicians. The vast majority of ordinary people don’t want any part of it." Read Chris Donnelly: tinyurl.com/2fyen8yu
