For what we think is the first time, batteries contributed more MW-age to last Tuesday evening's peak demand than Turlough Hill: 196MW vs. 181MW.

Massive new “reversible rusting” batteries could help Ireland’s electricity grid shift away from fossil fuels. Their maker says they can sop up power when the wind is blowing and store it for up to 100 hours, feeding it back into the grid when needed. dublininquirer.com/2024/09/1…

Still crunching the numbers but Eirgrid has published figures for August and it looks like our prediction was right: all-island solar output exceeded 700MW for the first time on Friday 30 and on Saturday 31 a new record was set: 719MW, or 17.2% of demand at the time 🥇☀️

Last month was a record breaking August for wind energy in Ireland 🎉
Every time a wind turbine is generating electricity, it is increasing our supply of clean energy to power our communities.

Record high renewables, record low fossil fuels for August - and a surprise all-time record for battery storage.
It was a great month for renewables on the Irish grid. Full report now on our website!

Great to see #GetOutInTheWind going international! Incredible pictures!!
@WindEnergyIRL
Our #GetOutintheWind effort at Gütsch Windpark, one of the highest in Europe at ~2300m: a short hiking loop (public transit accessible) along 4 turbines (3.3MW since 2012; to repower/expand to 14.7MW). Can confirm these are QUIET: crickets and cowbells much louder!

A silver medal for Irish solar in July: while a recent run of records looks to have ended, grid-scale solar generation equalled at least 3.5% of the month's all-island demand. That's the second-highest monthly figure ever ☀️🥈

Nothing like some sunny stats to brighten up the afternoon. Solar is certainly delivering the goods today, with our Operations Team overseeing the export of an impressive 200MW of clean, green #solarpower to the grid. 🌞⚡️

Renewable generation of >8.3TWh in the first half of 2024 was equal to ~41% of all-island electricity demand.
Solar accounts for ~355GWh of this year's total so far; that plus strong wind generation puts 2024 noticeably ahead of past years, as the chart below makes clear.

Meath remains the clear leader in Irish solar but Cork and Wexford solar farms have roughly doubled their output over the past 12 months. Together, they're now at ~80% that of Meath solar generation ☀️☀️☀️

Irish solar output exceeded 620MW at 3.30pm on Sunday June 23, a new high. This was almost 17% of all-island demand at the time!
Breaking down each county's contribution that day:
- Antrim ~10%
- Meath and Kildare ~50%
- Cork and Wexford ~40%

How did we do?
SEMO's daily meter report peaked at ~400MW while our estimate peaked at ~375MW. However, we'll be adjusting our estimates to account for how SEMO reports only solar farms >=10MW: a ~10-15% adjustment.
So...it's promising 🎯

Really interesting graph from @_fei_wang / @IrishEnergyBot showing wind energy generation for March 2024.

It was a stormy and wet March but there was an upside! 43% of Ireland's electricity came from wind last month making it the best March on record for wind energy. I spoke to the @rtenews At One today about the milestone - rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22…
