Thank you to everyone who came out to the reading in NYC this evening. It was wonderful to meet so many of you in person and have some lovely chats. These signed broadsides of one of my poems (designed by Chris Dean) will be available soon, and a video clip of the reading will be posted shortly. Love you all.

We Don't Know How To Say Goodbye ~Anna Akhmatova translated by Kunitz & Hayward —We don't know how to say goodbye: we wander on, shoulder by shoulder./ That stick in your hand is tracing mansions In which we shall always be together.

Barack: You told me all those years ago that you couldn’t promise me the world, but you could promise me an interesting life. Of course, you outdid yourself and managed to give me both. Eight years in the crucible, and not once did you melt from the heat. Not once did you let it harden you. Instead, you used it to reveal your truest essence: your stubborn optimism and unflinching courage, your dazzling brilliance and unpretentious decency, your ferocious work ethic and absolutely unshakable moral fiber.

Take me back in time when Los Angeles residents would mingle with celebrities, and walk up and down Wilshire Blvd every Easter. Each year Jack Benny would parody this on his radio and television shows. I was born in the wrong era.

I spend much of each week writing about the horrors in the world, bearing witness, doing my small part to find a little beauty and truth. Tonight my 4yo asked me, "Daddy, can you stay close to me until I fall asleep?" "Of course," I said. "I'm right here. Are you scared about something?" "No. We came from the same star. I just want to remember that." This world is for the children, and we're just here to keep their magic unhurt. Because they know something that they're trying really hard to tell us. And they're the same everywhere. Everywhere.

57 years ago today, Frank Sinatra recorded My Way. The lyrics were written by Paul Anka. The music comes from the French song "Comme d'habitude," by Jacques Revaux. Jacques wanted a hit English version. The first person to take a stab at it? David Bowie
