Recently, there’s been growing debate around whether athletes should delay return to play (RTP) until the final scar maturation stage is reached. We addressed this dilemma in our @RadioGraphics (2024) and @InsightsImaging (2021) papers, showing how MRI can support RTP decisions by identifying both the phase of muscle healing and the imaging markers linked to reinjury risk. RTP often occurs during intermediate healing phases, and full tissue normalization is not always required — but detecting radiological warning signs is critical. A multifactorial and shared decision-making process remains essential. 🔗 RadioGraphics 2024 – Muscle Healing and MRI pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3905… 🔗 InsightsImaging 2021 – Return to Play: Muscle MRI Beyond the Injury pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3657… #ReturnToPlay #MuscleInjury #MSKradiology #MRI #SportsMedicine

Grateful to the organizers of the Sociedade Paulista de Radiologia for the invitation to participate in this year’s congress in São Paulo, and special congratulations to Renato Hoffmann Nunes for the outstanding organization of such an impressive and dynamic meeting. It was a pleasure to reconnect with friends and colleagues from different parts of the world, strengthening ties between @SERAM_RX, @MskSerme and the international radiology community while sharing ideas, projects and experiences around musculoskeletal and sports imaging. I also had the opportunity to speak about a focused approach to imaging of triceps surae injuries, discussing practical concepts and imaging patterns relevant to daily sports medicine practice. Thank you again for the warm welcome, the scientific exchange and the unforgettable days in São Paulo. Looking forward to future collaborations and meeting again soon.

Grateful to Dr. Agustín Marrero for the initiative, organization and invitation to participate in this excellent meeting at Estadio UNO, focused on professional football, sports medicine and musculoskeletal imaging. I had the opportunity to present about the role of imaging in muscle healing, covering the continuum from acute injury to return to play, within a program focused on common scenarios in daily sports practice. It was also a pleasure to exchange experiences and different perspectives with colleagues and professionals dedicated to sports medicine and imaging. Thanks as well to Estudiantes de La Plata, CYTEC and all attendees for the interest, discussions and participation. Looking forward to repeating the experience soon! To mitigate this risk, a repeat MRI at 3-4 weeks, where feasible, can offer valuable insights into scar maturation and aponeurotic integrity. This, combined with achieving clear rehabilitation benchmarks, can better inform critical return-to-running and return-to-sport decisions.
