Highlights | MU-JHU at ISSAD 2026
MU-JHU proudly showcased its growing Group B Streptococcus research portfolio at the @IssadOrg 2026 Conference. Data Manager Valeria Tusubira presented a poster titled “Risk Factors of Vertical Transmission of Group B Streptococcus Among Colonised Mothers in Kampala, Uganda.”
We also celebrate our wider research team whose poster presentations strengthened the scientific dialogue: Dr. Agnes Ssali, Ritah Namugumya, Zam Nabalwanyi, Agnes Nyamaizi, Gordon Rukundo and Phiona Nalubega.
The meeting further featured MU-JHU expertise in Intrapartum Antibiotic Prophylaxis (IAP) for GBS Prevention during Plenary 6 chaired by Dr. Eve Nakabembe and Prof. Kirsty Le Doare.
Many thanks to the team for representing MU-JHU with excellence and commitment to improving maternal and newborn health.

It's been great working with @JanePlumb (of @GBSSupport) @smithvinny (@M_R_F), and Marti (@GroupBStrep) on the Parent Voice sessions for #ISSAD2023 @IssadOrg
Thanks to the organisers for being willing to have the parent and patient voice central throughout the conference.
Very proud to have co-led the Patient & Parent stream at #issad2023 representing GBSS.
I shared my Theo's story (from 1996 not 2023!), & highlighted it's vital researchers, funders & policy makers fully understand the parent and patient perspective. Together we're stronger 💪

Preya sharing her & her baby Uma's #groupBStrep stories. Thankfully both have made a full recovery from their infections, but Mum Preya hadn't heard of GBS before she & Uma were fighting the infection.
This should not be happening in the UK, or anywhere else

Incredibly fortunate to hear from the shared experiences of those families impacted by #GBS at @IssadOrg and this is what drives my research ❤️ #Prevention is key!

"Group B Strep is a priority pathogen" - it's estimated as being in the top ten (9th) in terms of the goal burden of deaths. Eye watering numbers being shared by Tomislav Mestrovic of IHME at #ISSAD2023 – at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Important talk from Shabir Madhi about the burden of #groupBStrep stillbirth.
So many countries don't count GBS stillbirths. Why not? It's not good enough - these babies matter and we need to recognise the hidden burden of GBS stillbirths.
