It was a great pleasure meeting Hon. Mercy Faith Lakisa @MercyLakiskis, Uganda’s Minister of State for Gender, Labour and Social Development responsible for Youth and Children Affairs, at yesterday’s #AGR27 consultations. She encouraged @NYCofUganda and civil society organisations to rally behind @APRMorg’s youth programmes and share Uganda’s best practices with the rest of Africa.
I was pleased to join the National Planning Authority and the African Peer Review Mechanism National and Continental Secretariats for a high-level institutional consultation in preparation for the Africa Governance Report 2027. Centered on the theme “Youth Leadership in Entrepreneurship, Industry, and the Public Sector,” this engagement highlighted the vital role of key stakeholders in refining policy frameworks and expanding strategic opportunities for young people across the continent. My sincere gratitude goes to the leadership of the NPA and APRM Secretariats for championing this vital cause; empowering youth through meaningful participation, robust public-private partnerships, and institutionalized leadership remains a cornerstone of our commitment to achieving inclusive, sustainable governance and long-term socio-economic prosperity.

Having been part of the Ugandan diaspora myself, I know how special it feels to remain connected to home, even when life takes you thousands of miles away. That is why I am genuinely happy to see the Immigration Directorate making an effort to bring immigration services closer to Ugandans abroad. A special thank you to Ms. Gloria Musimenta, the Immigration Attaché in Copenhagen, for her role in this important initiative. In 2025, our diaspora contributed approximately $2.5 billion to Uganda. Behind that contribution are Ugandans working hard, supporting their families and finding ways to contribute to the country they still call home. They deserve to know that they are valued and remembered, too. Gloria, thank you for the heart, dedication, and compassion you bring to your work. It means a lot to see someone making an effort to make life a little easier for our people so far away from home. Your work is appreciated more than you may realise. Keep up the wonderful work and continue making Uganda proud.

On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, I offer warm congratulations to His Excellency President @PaulKagame and the government and people of Rwanda on securing a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix. South Africa shares in the pride with which Rwanda is preparing to fly the chequered flag for our continent with the hosting of a globally prestigious event at the planned Bugesera circuit from the early 2030s. This contract is a recognition of the capabilities of the Rwandan nation and of our continent more broadly. As host of the first Grand Prix on African soil in 1993, and organiser of other major global events, South Africa will be happy to provide any support we may be invited to share. The F1 African Grand Prix is another lustrous addition to Rwanda’s growing collection of top international events, including the UCI-classified Tour du Rwanda cycling race. Congratulations, Rwanda. You are in pole position to make all of Africa proud and take motorsport to new heights.

The Government of South Africa announced the inclusion of holders of valid Ugandan passports in South Africa’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. But what does this actually mean for Ugandans planning to travel to South Africa? 👉 You apply online before travelling. 👉 You do not need a VFS appointment for the eTA application. 👉 You must still meet all applicable immigration and entry requirements when you arrive.

Today I had an opportunity to bid Farewell to @antonioguterres the UN Secretary General after completing my tour of duty as Ambassador of Uganda to the UN. I have had a close working relationship and a Father figure who checked on to see if I was doing well. Since 2017 we have worked together on various UN processes, Buenos Aires plan of action on south-south cooperation(BUPA), Pact of the future, Financing for Development(FFD), UN 75, UN80 reforms, UN Budget, support to Entebbe regional service center, reform of the UN Development system, and regional peace and security. He visited Uganda twice during my term. I wished him the best in the remaining three months as one of the most consequential UN Secretary Generals. I bid farewell to UN Secretary-General António Guterres after my tenure as Uganda’s UN ambassador. Since 2017, he has been a mentor and close collaborator on BUPA, the Pact of the Future, FFD, UN75, UN80 reforms, the UN budget, Entebbe’s regional center, development reform, and regional security; he visited Uganda twice. I wished him well in his final three months as a consequential leader.

This is a positive development for our people and a further reflection of the warm and cordial bilateral relations between Uganda and South Africa. It will facilitate greater movement and interaction between our two countries, while supporting tourism, business, trade, investment and people-to-people ties.

POV: Locally led development A year ago in Vienna, Austria, I was asked a question that has stayed with me: what does it really mean to put people at the centre of development? As the video depicts (youtu.be/6oB6D0Bs3Bc?si=gTJ4…), I was in Austria interacting with seasoned Austrian development cooperation practitioners on locally led development. I was asked of my opinion regarding youth participation and what true localisation of development in the Global South meant to me. As I opined then, to me, localisation is ultimately about agency. It is not simply about transferring resources (human, financial or otherwise), responsibilities or programs closer to communities. It is about recognising that people and institutions closest to a challenge often possess the context, ideas and lived experience needed to shape solutions that work—and giving them the power and space to lead the journey to that change they so wish to see - and to be! This is particularly important for Africa, where young people are not merely beneficiaries of development. They are actors, innovators, entrepreneurs, citizens and leaders shaping the continent’s future. A year later, the conversation feels even more relevant. Whether we are talking about youth employment, education, governance or development finance, the question remains the same: Are we creating systems that enable Africans to exercise agency over Africa’s development—or systems that continue to do development to and for Africa? That distinction matters. And it continues to shape how I think about my work: enabling others to flourish by creating the conditions for people to lead, rather than simply participate. Vienna, 2025. 🇦🇹🌍 Full video: youtu.be/6oB6D0Bs3Bc?si=gTJ4…

Did you know the key dimensions to regional integration in Africa? Let's take a look! 📊 Trade integration → Manufacturing thrives when tariffs fall & services regulations are non discriminatory. 🏗️ Infrastructure integration → Integrated corridors that connect producers to markets. 💼 Productive integration → Raw materials tranaformed to finished goods. 🚗 Free movement of people → Seamless borders - a visa free Africa. 💰 Macroeconomic convergence → Capital flows freely across borders. 🏛️ Strong institutional frameworks → Policy aligns to enable scale. When these sync, something powerful happens: We step closer to actualizing the Africa we want. #IntegrateAfrica

Five years later, our mission remains the same: ensuring young people are not just beneficiaries of the @AfCFTA, but active architects of its implementation. I reflected on why @ICOYACA was founded, the journey from youth advocacy to influencing continental policy and why meaningful youth participation must remain at the heart of Africa’s trade agenda. This is our story. This is our purpose. @_AfricanUnion @AUYouthProgram @OneYoungAfrica @MSTCDC @IvanAtuyambe @EmolotFdn @ydacafrica
