Let's hear it for @JBGarner_Writes, writing as Emelia Quantrille. Her new novel, SONGS & SORCERY, is on sale TODAY on the 'Zon. It's a #fantasy #mystery featuring a fabulous walled city & a murderer who kills with pleasure. I bought my copy. How about you? amazon.com/Songs-Sorcery-Boo…

A hard lesson I've learned, especially hard as I'm an idealist in many ways, is that the majority of people act selfishly, only with care to their own immediate needs. They MIGHT extend that care to their immediate families. MAYBE. 🧵

But they don't have the capacity to empathize beyond that. They say they do. But the moment their personal interests are the least impacted - or even if they get a whiff of a chance for personal gain - they will shut down that empathy and act to their selfish desires.

The price of eggs and gas is worth more to them than a million disaffected lives. More than civil rights. More than the dignity of their women in their lives. Maybe more than their own, less tangible things. I'm not sure any more how to combat that.

2016, I could understand a little. Trump was more of an unknown politically and had the facade of reality TV. But to elect him in 2024, after he's shown his true face, had his crimes exposed, been convicted of multiple felonies? There's no understanding or forgiveness of that.

It is jarring af to be reminded how much your country hates you on such a regular basis. Like to be Black, to be queer, to be trans, to be a woman… you know there are far too many people who hate you more than they love themselves.
