• Fiscal 2028: Tokyo and Shin-Osaka
• Fiscal 2029: Nagoya

🚆 JR Kyushu’s blue 883 series Sonic trains are getting refreshed interiors, with refurbished sets entering service progressively from around spring 2027 on the Hakata–Kokura–Oita route.
💺 New seats and flooring will give each car a different look, with its own upholstery design. Wall-side power outlets will be added throughout the seating areas for charging phones and laptops.
The shared spaces in the vestibules will also be redesigned, creating calmer areas to spend time away from your seat.
The images show the planned interiors.
🚄 JR Central has announced the S0 series, a new generation of trains for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, with passenger service planned for July 2029.
The name combines “S” for Shinkansen and Supreme with “0,” marking a new starting point beyond the N700 series. A test train is due in August 2028, followed by 25 production trainsets through the first half of fiscal 2032.
💺 Green Cars will offer two seat designs: multifunction armrests with phone and drink holders in cars 8 and 9, and larger privacy partitions in car 10. Other improvements include more foot space, upgraded Wi-Fi, reduced sideways movement when trains pass, and a grooming area in car 9. Car 10’s layout also includes six Supreme Class Seats and one Supreme Class Cabin.
🧳 Vestibule luggage-storage areas will increase from six to nine, with larger overhead racks. Women-only restrooms will gain approximately 25% more space and baby-changing facilities, while men-only restrooms will have sliding doors.
The S0 will be equipped for automated operation with a driver remaining in the cab. Timetable and speed-restriction updates transmitted by a new radio system will support energy-efficient running and delay recovery; that information link is scheduled to enter use at the end of fiscal 2030.
Safety improvements aim to cut the time from earthquake detection to braking from about two seconds to 0.2 seconds, with braking distances approximately 5% shorter than the N700S. A redesigned nose and other changes are expected to reduce energy consumption by around 6%.
Some Green Car improvements will arrive earlier on newly built N700S trains from December 2027, with selected upgrades also planned for existing trains.

👀 Nankai Namba Station and an 8300 series train are getting eyeball-themed Halloween decorations, scheduled from October 5 as part of CHIMNEY TOWN HALLOWEEN 2026 in NAMBA.
🚆 One four-car train will carry the special wrap on services between Namba and Wakayamakō or Kansai Airport.
At Namba Station, the main staircase is scheduled to feature matching red-and-eyeball decorations through October 18.
The designs draw on Japan’s “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons” and traditional beliefs about spirits inhabiting everyday objects, making trains and station features appear to come to life.
🏮 The wider event runs October 15–18 at Namba Square, outside the station, with around 5,000 lanterns and eyeball installations supervised by Akihiro Nishino, creator of Poupelle of Chimney Town. Admission is free, with the square open noon–9 p.m. and lanterns illuminated from 4–9 p.m.

🚉 JR Kyushu plans to open THE STATION HOTEL BEPPU 1911 inside historic Higashi-Beppu Station in spring 2027.
The hotel will occupy the station’s wooden building, which dates from 1911 and is designated a Tangible Cultural Property by Beppu City. The project will turn part of the working station into accommodation while retaining original features such as wooden columns and sliding doors.
🏨 Only one group will stay each night, with capacity for up to seven guests. The former station office will become the main accommodation space, while a new separate building will contain a bathroom overlooking a garden.
Higashi-Beppu Station is on the Nippo Main Line, one stop and about three minutes from Beppu Station, in the Hamawaki Onsen area of Beppu.
Guests will also be offered local experiences, including walking tours around Hamawaki and Beppu, plus optional art, craft, and cultural activities.
Reservations are expected to open around November 2026, with room rates and meal details to be announced at that time. ♨️
🚉 JR Kyoto Station will trial real-time crowd monitoring in its conventional-line areas from October 7 to 9, 2026, between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. each day.
📷 About 20 cameras and 20 Bluetooth sensors will monitor passenger movements at 11 locations across the platforms and concourses. Each device will carry a sticker indicating that testing is underway.
JR West and the Railway Technical Research Institute are developing the system with technical support from Sinumy. The aim is to better understand crowding throughout the station and use that information to plan congestion relief measures and station improvements.
🔒 Organizers say camera footage will be processed into anonymized passenger counts and movement data, with the original recordings then deleted. Bluetooth device identifiers will be anonymized and encrypted. Collected data will be used only for this research.
Passengers who prefer to avoid the equipment can reach the platforms via the Underground East Gate or Hachijo East Gate. Turning off Bluetooth on your device will prevent its Bluetooth signals from being collected.
