Presentación del libro "No somos un país de mierda (todavía)" con un panel de lujo. Interesantísimo debate sobre cómo nos fue, dónde estamos parados y hacia dónde debemos ir. Felicitaciones @danyscht !!

What were the Ottoman origins of the mandate system? Prof. Aimee Genell joins us to discuss how Ottoman lawyers, officials, and diplomats used autonomy to limit European influence, and the legacy of these arrangements in the Middle East after World War I.

An important essay by David Armitage, reflecting on the intellectual roots of his landmark book, The Ideological Origins of the British Empire (2000), published 25 years ago. He reconstructs and reconsiders his own contribution and arguments and the scholarship that was produced on the subject since its original publication. It was an inspirational book for me when I started to work on imperial ideologies in the history and theory of International law in the Americas back in 2007. Really worth reading!

Thought-provoking, perhaps controversial, and certainly worth reading!
"Bringing Order to Anarchy: Governing the World to Come" by Charles A. Kupchan.
amzn.to/4zLh695
"The stable and open international order erected on America’s watch is unraveling. Democracy is losing ground to autocracy; globalized markets are fragmenting; and the era of perpetual peace foreseen at the close of the Cold War has given way to great-power rivalry. This fracture of the international system comes just as many of our greatest challenges, such as climate change, the threat of pandemics, and rapidly changing technologies, require collective action. Charles A. Kupchan diagnoses the sources of global disarray and offers a handbook for building a new order fit for the emerging multipolar world."
Richard Haass: "Bringing Order to Anarchy crosses boundaries in every sense. It looks back and ahead, domestically and internationally, regionally and globally. Writing with clarity and purpose, Charles Kupchan puts forward an optimistic yet grounded vision of a contemporary world order, one premised on addressing America’s internal challenges and adopting a U.S. foreign policy that avoids the twin perils of trying to do too little or too much."

Wonderful to see this:
"The Liberalism of Fear", Judith N. Shklar
A classic essay that envisions liberalism not as the triumphant endpoint of political progress, or even a cohesive ideology, but rather as a precarious guardrail against abuses of power.

This isn’t correct. British industrialization came from Britain’s distinctive structure of factor prices. GB had unusually high wages alongside exceptionally cheap coal. Development was not because of some unique cultural commitment to “empiricism and progress”.
Replying to @the_qadrii
Why did the Industrial Revolution happen in Britain and not the Ottoman Empire, despite the Ottomans having immense resources and strong institutions? Because institutions without a cultural framework that values empiricism, risk, and progress are just bureaucracy.
