The following groups were designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations by the U.S. Department of State on February 20, 2025:  •Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG): A Mexican cartel known for its extreme violence and rapid expansion. •Cártel de Sinaloa: A powerful Mexican cartel formerly led by Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. •Cártel del Noreste (CDN): A cartel operating in northeastern Mexico that was formerly part of Los Zetas. •Cártel del Golfo (Gulf Cartel): A violent and long-running Mexican cartel operating in the northeastern part of the country. •Cárteles Unidos (United Cartels):An alliance of various cartels and gangs in Michoacán, Mexico, formed to combat rival organizations like CJNG. •La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM): A Mexican criminal organization involved in drug trafficking, extortion, and kidnapping. •Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13): A transnational gang with origins in Los Angeles and strongholds in Central America. •Tren de Aragua (TdA): A transnational criminal organization that originated in Venezuela and has spread throughout Latin America.  On the same day, Canada also listed seven of these organizations as terrorist entities under its Criminal Code, following the U.S. designations.  This designation of cartels as FTOs represents a significant shift in U.S. policy, previously treating them primarily as transnational criminal organizations.
