New in @JSurgRes: Medicaid expansion linked to 7.5% lower mortality in renal cell carcinoma (284,967 patients, NCDB). Biggest gains for Hispanic patients — but no significant improvement for Black patients. Coverage saves lives; equity needs more. 📄 doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2026.0…

📈 Random forest provided greater net benefit at risk thresholds of 5–25%, suggesting potential value for early resource planning. 🏥 These models could help teams anticipate resource needs and coordinate care earlier. #BurnCare #BurnSurgery #MachineLearning
26
Both models achieved similar discrimination (AUC ≈0.74). Random forest better identified high-cost admissions (sensitivity 78.6%), while logistic regression better identified non-high-cost admissions (specificity 82.3%).

🔎 The models used four admission predictors—age, total body surface area burned, inhalation injury, and burn mechanism—to estimate the likelihood of a high-cost hospitalization. Burn size was the most influential predictor.

🔥 Can early clinical information predict which burn patients will incur high hospital costs? 📊 In a study of 363 adult and pediatric burn patients, 90 (24.8%) had variable direct hospital costs above the cohort’s 75th percentile.

Publish in the @JSurgRes! We conducted a secondary analysis using Peru’s 2023 hospitalization database from the Superintendencia Nacional de Salud (SUSALUD). Our analysis found that hospitalizations due to intestinal volvulus were more frequent in high-altitude regions, with a significant positive correlation between altitude and hospitalization rates. Excited to contribute to the growing understanding of the epidemiology of intestinal volvulus in Peru. 📉 Postdischarge complication rates did not differ significantly by prior inpatient complications (p=0.20) or intervention type (p=0.344). 🏥 Findings support the need for consistent long-term follow-up, although follow-up data were available for only 40 patients.
41
🔎 Reported predictors: • Inpatient complications: Higher Injury Severity Score, lower Glasgow Coma Scale, and internal carotid injury. • Postdischarge complications: No postoperative platelet transfusion and longer ICU stay.

🩸 Vascular complications after cervical arterial repair can emerge beyond discharge—even in patients without inpatient complications. 📊 PROOVIT: 140 patients underwent repair; 67% sustained penetrating trauma and 27% experienced inpatient vascular complications.
