Underratedly funny detail of this NIMBY extravaganza is that the Lidl literally would’ve been built with local stone

Is building on unused council land a good policy idea? Yes of course. Is it the solution to the housing crisis? Of course it isn't. read my latest post in which I attempt to make some maps and do some rough maths.
In his conference speech, Burnham proposed building more council homes on unused council land. Councils own lots of land, but how much of it is suitable for building? @FionualaMc investigates how much of it could be built on in Manchester. samdumitriu.com/p/how-much-u…

Was bang up for this Algerian riposte to Camus' L'Etranger, but found this tedious and plotless.

70 years ago this month, Britain opened the world's first full-scale nuclear power plant, Calder Hall. By 1966 we were generating more electricity from nuclear than the rest of the world combined. But in 2026, we haven't completed a new station for 31 years.

How building data centres could cut Britain's sky-high electricity bills by billions: - Failing electricity use has made electricity more expensive as a fixed costs of supplying power (grid, policy, balancing, etc.) are concentrated on a small share of demand. - New demand from data centres helps dilute those fixed costs. This could save £2bn a year (£69 per year) if the Government's compute target is hit. - Data centres are extremely profitable, even at high power prices. They care about speed, but the grid queue can create decade-long delays. Letting companies pay to jump the queue could raise billions. - Britain could replicate the success of spectrum auctions and sell-off faster grid connections. Accelerating 3GW by 3 years is potentially worth £12bn to data centre builders! - In the US, tech companies are making large investments in new generation (SMRs, gas, renewables) as states adopt 'bring your own power' policies. Doing the same here could accelerate clean power buildout and fund necessary gas plant renewals. samdumitriu.com/p/build-the-…

Burnham's an interesting politician in that he's only retail politics and massive ideas to completely reshape the state, with nothing in between

Whether Dungeness is viable for a new nuclear site is a test case for whether the Government is serious about a "golden age of new nuclear"
Will Britain see new nuclear power stations across the country? We should look to places like Dungeness in Kent for the answer. If the Government's plans don't pave the way for new stations on existing sites like this one, they can't be taken seriously.

The Welsh economy is roughly 25x bigger than in 1846 when Robert Stephenson built the Britannia Bridge. It took him 4 years. We're saying there's simply no way a new one can be done in under 8-10 years. Can't be done.
What if Rhun ap Iorwerth had insisted that a bridge be built to open in 2030, to show that Wales can still build? Maybe taking inspiration from 🇫🇷 and Notre Dame, appoint a General to get it done at all costs. Override any process objections with a Menai Bridge bill if needed. No doubt many obstacles, but laws of physics isn’t one, so what or who exactly would prevent it? Just imagine the national and international shot in the arm this would be to show that stagnation and decline are not inevitable. And if anyone thinks this isn’t a serious suggestion, what does that in itself say about our psyche and state of the nation/West?
