I tracked and analyzed every inspirational quote LeBron James has posted to his Instagram Story since it was announced that he was playing for the Sixers. James posted 497 inspirational quotes and I shared my methodology and findings for the latest edition of @impersonal_foul.

I'm absolutely thrilled to have written this article for Long Now. It's about AI and time: how we got here, and what we can do now, when all of the pace layers are disrupted at once by an influx of new minds. I wrote this over the summer. At the time, it seemed maybe too weird, like people wouldn't believe or understand what I was saying. And of course, everything changes so fast that it's hard to imagine writing something about AI that far in advance and have it still make sense. But I think the events of the last few months have only made it more relevant. The Long Now Foundation has been an inspiration to me for a decade now, and has changed my life in countless ways. I'm incredibly grateful and honored to be among so many of my heroes and friends and colleagues represented in this issue of Pace Layers and Long Now Ideas. I wouldn't be here in San Francisco, here on Twitter, or here in the field of artificial intelligence if not for this community. The conversation about AI has been fractious. It's very hard to think about how to fit this sudden, disruptive, technological change into the 10,000-year view. I hope I provide some insights, or at least some new angles for the conversation. It's scary to go on the record, especially about something that will affect everyone, and affect the rest of history. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong forever! Please read and enjoy, and post quotes and screenshots, and buy Pace Layers Issue 3 so you can have a permanent hard copy. I have always wanted to be a part of the 10,000-year library, so I have to be serious for once and try to stand for something. Let me know what you think.
In 02025, @deepfates helped throw a funeral for an AI. The power went out mid-ceremony, and the crowd hummed it back to life. In “Attention is All You Need,” deepfates tells the story of that night, their backstory on a hippie commune with Whole Earth Catalogs on the shelf, and how they got here: in San Francisco on the eve of another technological disruption. Civilization runs on shared human attention, they argue, and AI has just made attention cheap, endless, and on tap. So what happens to the slow pace layers — culture, governance, nature — when everything starts to speed up? And what could we finally accomplish if we had enough attention to spare? Read the essay online here: na2.hubs.ly/H08ySWy0 Or, hold it in your hands: pre-order Pace Layers, Long Now’s annual print journal, launching this November. New annual subscribers also get a free copy of Issue 2, while supplies last. Artwork by @caseycripe

The thing is. And this was a major 🔑 for me several years ago, in thinking about the podcast, is that communists are obsessed with capitalism. Some of them are so obsessed that they might even secretly love it. Whereas capitalists rarely spend any time thinking about it.
I love the Odd Lots podcast, but I could do without the commie gobbledygook that occasionally appears in the programming

a key element of fascism is making it appear that the entire world is organized against your group when in fact you are in the most advantageous and powerful position in society. the los angeles lakers are a textbook example of this phenomenon.

Conducting your own poll of Mississippi using the same platform to figure out if the data was fabricated or not is honestly such an awesome way to prove that a poll is fake. Absolutely genius idea.

You know, there's hearing that "in the bigger picture, Zionism actually makes Jews LESS safe" and then there's learning that they almost shot Literally Seinfeld George.
Jason Alexander says he feared visiting Palestine as a Jew until 10 Palestinians protected him during an Israeli army raid in Ramallah “How much of a risk would I be taking as an American Jew walking into Palestinian cities? And Mohammed said, ‘The greatest dishonor that could happen to a religious Muslim is to allow harm to come to an invited guest’” “And he said, ‘Jason, if they had to, they’ll take a bullet for you.’ And what was so interesting about that trip is, we were having lunch in Ramallah with a bunch of actors and artists at a sort of outdoor restaurant” “And the Israeli army was conducting a raid on a bank that they thought had terrorist ties a couple blocks away. And they must have, to announce themselves, just shot into the air. And I remember 10 of those guys at the table surrounding me. And I went, ‘Oh my God, he wasn’t kidding. They’re not going to let me get hurt’”

"THREE HOURS of turgid, lugubrious shots of unpleasant, unattractive, clinically depressed rich people ineptly manipulating each another" is exactly the appeal !
Don't be fooled by the hype. This is THREE HOURS of turgid, lugubrious shots of unpleasant, unattractive, clinically depressed rich people ineptly manipulating each another. Possibly the most boring movie I've ever seen. Much left unexplained but who cares, the stakes are so low.
