During my IFSO presidency, we will develop 𝟱 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁, 𝗘𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 on the benefits of metabolic and bariatric surgery for major obesity-related diseases: 🔹 Type 2 Diabetes 🔹 Hypertension 🔹 Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) 🔹 Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) 🔹 Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) 🎯 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Make the best available scientific evidence accessible, understandable, and widely shared. Each statement will include: ✅ A rigorous review of the best available scientific evidence, prioritizing the highest levels of evidence. ✅ A short, easy-to-read 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 highlighting clinically meaningful outcomes. ✅ A powerful 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 featuring a key, evidence-supported statistic—for example, “XX% diabetes remission after metabolic surgery.” These resources will be designed not only for bariatric surgeons but also for 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 worldwide. That is the vision behind another major initiative of my IFSO Presidency: 🎓 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗙𝗦𝗢 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺. Our goal is to establish a globally recognized, high-quality training framework that will: ☑️ Endorse selected fellowship programs worldwide that meet rigorous IFSO standards. ☑️ Establish comprehensive surgical training requirements, including revisional surgery, complex cases, complications and clinical decision-making. ☑️ Incorporate formal Obesity Medicine training and certification pathways, such as SCOPE or ABOM where applicable. ☑️ Explore optional advanced Bariatric Endoscopy training. ☑️ Develop pathways toward IFSO Certification in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. ☑️ Prepare the next generation of surgeons to lead 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲, including combination therapies. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀. We are inviting Gerhard Prager and Shanu Kothari to lead this effort as Chair and Co-Chair of the IFSO Education Committee, working alongside our Obesity Medicine and Bariatric Endoscopy Sections and IFSO Certification leadership. Our target is to develop the framework during 2026–2027, with the goal of launching the program in 2027.
