The Khazars were a semi-nomadic Turkic people that in the late 5th-century had established a major commercial empire covering the southeastern section of modern European Russia, Southern Ukraine, Crimea, Jordan and Kazakhstan.

I admit that I completely broke down today. I cried uncontrollably. I couldn’t hold myself together after witnessing what I saw with my own eyes.
Today, we went to film a journalistic report inside the displacement tents along the seashore. I swear, what we witnessed was beyond what any human being should have to endure.
I saw men crying bitterly. Men I had never seen cry when they lost their children or when their homes were destroyed. Today, I saw them crying because they were powerless to do the simplest thing: protect their children from the water and the cold.
We spoke to families who told us they had spent the entire night carrying their children in their arms after floodwater covered the floors of their tents and soaked their mattresses. They couldn’t find a single dry place to put their children. They couldn’t even give them a few hours of sleep.
I saw children no older than five, without proper clothes to protect them from the cold, without heating, and without a dry place to sleep. Children shivering inside tents that cannot keep out the rain, protect them from the wind, or provide even the most basic sense of safety.
What more must happen for this world to act? How much more suffering must people endure before someone remembers that they are human beings?
I am sick of this world. I am sick of its hypocrisy and empty slogans. To hell with a world that talks endlessly about human rights while leaving children to drown inside their tents. To hell with everyone who has witnessed this suffering and chosen silence, and to hell with the governments and institutions that have the power to act but continue to turn their backs on us.

France cuts aid to Burkina Faso in 2023 and predicted Burkina Faso would struggle. But who is struggling and facing bankrupcy today and who is thriving like never before, like a house on fire?
Four years later, Burkina Faso opened its first gold refinery.
On September 28, 2026, Captain Ibrahim Traoré inaugurated RAFFINOR-BF in Ouagadougou. The plant cost more than 11 billion CFA francs—about $19 million—and was financed by the state through the National Precious Substances Company alongside domestic private partners. It sits on five hectares. Its initial capacity is 164 tonnes of gold per year, with a target of 515 tonnes. Burkina Faso produced 94 tonnes in 2025, making it Africa's third-largest gold producer behind Ghana and South Africa.
The refinery's purpose is not complicated. For decades, Burkina Faso shipped raw gold abroad to be refined, sold, and taxed elsewhere. The value was added in Europe. The country kept the hole in the ground.
Traoré put it plainly: "From now on, gold from Burkina Faso must not only be extracted in Burkina Faso, it must be processed, controlled, valued and certified in Burkina Faso". He added: "We want to refine all our metals on site. We want to have the entire value chain on site".
Mines Minister Yacouba Zabré Gouba was blunter: "This is the day we take back the keys to our own house. Our gold will no longer be used to create added value for others while our own people remain in need".
This is not an isolated gesture. The government suspended artisanal and semi-mechanised gold exports in 2024. Foreign mining firms are now required to give the state a 15 percent stake and train local workers. A state-owned mining company was created two years ago. Output rose 17 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026.
Guinea and Ghana have restricted unrefined gold exports. Mali is building a refinery with Russia's Yadran Group. Ivory Coast says it will open one next year. West Africa is moving in the same direction: stop exporting the rock, start owning the chain.
One caveat. A refinery does not automatically mean every ounce stays in Burkina Faso. Reports since the inauguration say the government agreed in June 2026 to store part of its reserves with a Moscow-based bank, and international sales still depend on London Bullion Market Association standards the refinery must meet. The refinery is a real step toward sovereignty. It is not the finish line.
But the step is real. A country that once exported raw gold now owns the plant that refines it.

Vi el fragmento de Mélenchon en la Convención de Le Bourget y me detuve en una parte que no suele escucharse así de claro en Europa. Dice que Francia actuará de frente por los palestinos: contra el genocidio en Gaza y contra la anexión que sigue avanzando en Cisjordania. No es un “condenamos enérgicamente”. Es la idea de que, si hace falta, los barcos franceses escolten las flotillas de ciudadanos que intentan llegar.
Eso cambia el tono. La mayoría de los gobiernos europeos se queda en el comunicado de prensa y en el “seguimos de cerca la situación”. Aquí hay una propuesta concreta: no dejar solas a las personas que se están organizando para romper el bloqueo. También habla de no aceptar la anexión del sur del Líbano ni de los Altos del Golán, y de organizar movilización real por las comunidades cristianas que están siendo asediadas en Palestina y en el Líbano. No es un discurso bonito sobre “todas las víctimas”; es nombrar lugares y decir que la expansión no se detiene sola.
A mí me parece importante que alguien con posibilidad real de disputar la presidencia francesa lo diga de esa manera. Porque la izquierda europea lleva tiempo hablando de Palestina y, al mismo tiempo, viendo cómo se normaliza lo que está ocurriendo. Mélenchon no está resolviendo nada con ese discurso, pero sí está rompiendo el cálculo de que se puede seguir sin pagar un costo político por el silencio. En un momento en que casi todo se vuelve “complejo” y “ambos lados”, esa frontalidad se siente rara. Y necesaria.
