A market failure is the inefficient allocation of resources in a free market. It is not high/low/volatile prices. Given that the #EU's #gas market has filled storages, curbed demand and pulled in loads of #LNG, it's hard to see how it could have been any more of success.
Replying to @ntsafos
The starting point for the intervention is a diagnosis of market failure in European gas:
✅ Prices untethered from fundamentals
✅ Manipulation by a dominant player
✅ Sharp drops in liquidity
✅ Extreme volatility
In this context, the question is *how* to intervene, not if.

Thermal coal is $120 a ton more expensive than coking coal despite being ‘inferior’ in quality. Some market commentators have suggested this presents an arbitrage opportunity, and soon the pricing gap will close.
Here is why substitution is not that simple. Let’s dig in🧵:

Wow! Germany quick out of the starting blocks - the govt has given cash to gas hub operator THE to start buying LNG to help refill depleted German storage sites. A reported Eur1.5 billion. Might not get them much at current prices, mind. #ONGT
Some #gas storage context: this chart expresses aggregate De,Nl,Be,Fr stocks in terms of the avg temp deviation needed to cut levels to 10% by end-March.
Normally stocks can withstand Bal-Win temps at least 15% colder than normal (typically a lot lower), but... 1/2

"Why is electricity so much more expensive than the cheapest and cleanest ways of producing it?"
Answer: bc the cheap/clean gen isn't enough to meet demand. For production to = demand we need to pay anyone who can supply the extra. Gas&coal gen can do this, if prices cover costs

1•Too much decentralized markets cannot guarantee both decarbonization & security of supply
2•More coordination & planning are required. Don’t do it like UK government which did not care. on.ft.com/3BjmR06
