“The Other” by Thomas Tryon, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1971.
Tryon’s debut novel, it is a psychological horror story centering on identical twin brothers and a series of increasingly dark events on their family’s farm in rural Connecticut during the summer of 1935.

🕯️ ON THIS DAY: Exactly 100 years ago, on Halloween 1926, the legendary magician and escape artist Harry Houdini died at the age of 52.
Houdini had spent decades astonishing audiences with seemingly impossible escapes from handcuffs, locked containers, underwater restraints and straitjackets.
Yet his death followed an ordinary medical emergency rather than one of his extraordinary stunts.
Days earlier, a student in Montreal had repeatedly punched Houdini in the abdomen after questioning whether the performer could withstand powerful blows. Houdini subsequently developed serious abdominal complications and died of peritonitis associated with appendicitis.
Whether the punches caused or worsened his condition remains disputed by historians.
The coincidence of Houdini dying on Halloween helped create one of the most enduring legends in entertainment history, particularly because he had spent his later career exposing fraudulent spiritualists and mediums.
A century later, his death is still surrounded by mystery.
