If Sola Scriptura (“Bible Alone”) were true, the most bulletproof defense of it would at a minimum be debatable. The best argument in favor is so weak that I wouldn’t call it an argument. Over and over, I see people quoting 2 Timothy 3:16-17 like it’s an ace in their back pocket. It doesn’t even put the historic Catholic position on unstable footing. Paul’s letter to Timothy says that Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness, with the result that the man of God is competent and equipped for every good work. These verses are a strong affirmation of Scripture’s inspiration and practical usefulness. Great. Catholics agree. The text does not say that Scripture is the ONLY source of revelation, the SOLE infallible rule of faith, or formally SUFFICIENT apart from apostolic tradition and the Church’s living authority. Some draw the “sola” from the phrase “equipped for every good work,” but those words don’t make the inference necessary; they are fully consistent with Scripture functioning as one indispensable element within the larger deposit of faith that is handed on in word and writing and interpreted by the Church. On top of all this, Paul tells us which Scripture he’s talking about in verse 15: the Scripture from Timothy’s childhood. In other words, the Old Testament. He’s not talking about the Gospels, or his own letters. Obviously. People believe in Sola Scriptura because they think their faith is broken without it, but in fact a rejection of Sola Scriptura opens the door to the fullness of the faith.
