Some of our children had never been to the cinema – until today! 🎞️🍿🤩 There’s no standardised score, progress measure or league table to demonstrate the importance of this but when you’re serving a community where this stuff isn’t a given, let me tell you, it matters. 💙
Children in year 2 and year 3 went to the cinema to see The Sloth Lane today – for some it was their first time at the cinema! The film had a bit of Spanish in it and they got very excited that they could understand it from their lessons. ☺️🎞️🇪🇸

We used to have a lot more autonomy to do this. Since the huge push on “fidelity” regardless of age or stage, things have moved to a much more “one size fits all” approach which has led to some children having gaps and still being expected to make the same progress. It’s complex.

Absolutely. The cognitive load of sitting still for children who haven’t fully mapped their bodies is often overlooked by CLT enthusiasts. If a child hasn’t developed proprioception, they’re not what Pagani (2012) refers to as “mind free” . They won’t be able to focus for long

Just because we can, it doesn’t mean we should. This is why we need people to understand that literacy is a physical process. We can’t separate brain and body, not should we try to. There’s so much research available to back this up.

Thanks for sharing, James. There’s definitely an assumption that children arrive with phonological awareness “all done”, but the research says otherwise. Even when we’re cracking on with phonics, spotting and adapting to early phonological gaps can prevent long-term difficulties. This study looks interesting, but it’s behind a paywall, so I can only access the abstract.

Excited to see how this piece of work will grow and how the voices of the children and young people involved will influence change!
Enacting the UNCRC means children have rights to consent, to be consulted, and to complain. But often adult myths about their capacity get in the way. @JoChamberlain83 and I asked children & young people what they thought of these myths - here is what we learned from them!

The children & young people had a lot to say on this, privileged to have had the opportunity to listen to their views and hear what they think needs to be done. Next step is to follow through on what they’ve asked and share this and the resources we are developing far and wide.

So many interventions and structural changes do not follow these principles, leading to the REAL problem not being addressed and a degradation of trust and motivation in organisations.
