American journalist James Foley was taken hostage by ISIS. Our gov’t refused to negotiate his release. ISIS murdered him. 10 yrs ago, his mother started #FoleyFoundation to inspire moral courage, protect journalists, & free American hostages & wrongful detainees. #JimFoley10Years

At least five Americans remain unjustly detained in Russian custody and none of them has been designated as wrongfully detained by the Secretary of State.
That designation is not just a bureaucratic label - it is a lifeline. It unlocks mental health support, travel assistance, SPEHA advocacy, and a Letter of Wrongful Detention to help rebuild a life after captivity.
Without it, these five may not receive the full support Congress intended:
✅ Andre Khachatoorian
✅ Olga Jezler
✅ David Barnes
✅ Chuck Zimmerman
✅ Aleksandr Antonov

Today we celebrate two years of freedom for @TigranGambaryan!
After 241 days unjustly detained in Nigeria, Tigran was finally able to return home to his family. Throughout his wrongful detention, his loved ones fought relentlessly for his freedom.
Today, we celebrate Tigran, his family, and everyone who stood with them. We also recognize that release is not the finish line. Returnees and their families deserve continued support as they recover from captivity and rebuild their lives.

Prominent dissident artist Gao Zhen was detained by the CCP for his work. In addition, the CCP is now holding his seven-year old American son and wife under an exit ban and refusing to let them return to America.
Watch to learn how the CCP uses arbitrary detention and exit bans to hold American families hostage and suppress freedom of expression.

Today, Stephen Hubbard is heading home.
Stephen is finally back in America with his loved ones after enduring four years of unjust detention. Our nation celebrates his return and offers him our prayers as he begins this next chapter of his life. Because of President Trump's leadership, more than 100 Americans have been freed from captivity and returned home.
The Trump Administration will always work tirelessly to secure the release of Americans unjustly detained abroad and will continue its campaign to free those who are still wrongfully detained.

Our @BOFHcampaign applauds the release of Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired teacher from Michigan, who was designated wrongfully detained by @StateDept in early 2025. Congratulations to the Hubbard family and thank you @POTUS @realDonaldTrump @SecRubio @SebGorka @SEPeaceMissions @jaredkushner for reuniting him with his family.
At the same time, we must continue our advocacy efforts for 5 Americans still detained in Russia who like Hubbard should be designated and also brought home.
"Andre Khachatoorian was detained in 2021 and sentenced to eight and half years for arms trafficking – charges he denies. Khachatoorian, an American of Armenian descent, was arrested while traveling from the US to Armenia via Moscow.
David Barnes was arrested in 2022. According to the Foley Foundation, which advocates for American hostages and wrongful detainees, he was detained after his ex-wife, who kidnapped his sons from Texas to Russia, made allegations of abuse that had already been disproven twice by Texas officials.
Aleksander Antonov, who came to the US as a Soviet refugee and has since become a naturalized US citizen, was arrested in 2025 when attempting to cross the border from Russia into Estonia. According to the @JamesFoleyFund, he was accused of “anti-Russian sentiment,” the Foley Foundation said. He was sentenced to six years for inciting terrorism and extremism.
Olga Jezler, a permanent US resident, was arrested for drug trafficking and sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2022. According to the @JamesFoleyFund, she was carrying legal CBD oil into Russia for her sister who was struggling with breast cancer and Russian prosecutors deliberately misclassified the substance as hashish oil.
Chuck Zimmerman, who is described by his supporters as a Navy veteran who was intercepted by the Russian navy while sailing in international waters. He was charged with arms trafficking for having a firearm on board."

After more than four years in a Russian penal colony — seized from his home in Ukraine and charged on fabricated charges — Stephen Hubbard is finally free. To his family and to supporters who never stopped fighting for him: Welcome Home!
But this is not the end of the story.
The Foley Foundation is still calling for the release of other Americans wrongfully detained in Russia, including:
✅Andre Khachatoorian
✅Olga Jezler
✅David Barnes
✅Chuck Zimmerman
✅Aleksandr Antonov
One man's freedom is a victory. Every American's freedom is the goal.
We don't stop at one. We don't forget the rest.

On September 24, our Director for Missing Persons Affairs Maryam Kamalmaz spoke at the Justice for the Missing in Syria panel, hosted by the U.S. State Department in partnership with Syria’s commission for missing persons. Alongside Ambassador Ibrahim Olabi, Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Maryam was joined by Diane Foley, mother of disappeared journalist Jim Foley and president of the Foley Foundation. Maryam and Diane shared their experiences searching for loved ones who were detained by the Assad regime, and the necessity for family-centered, family-led transitional justice in Syria today in pursuit of truth and accountability. Watch to hear a bit of Maryam’s story, and her message for the community moving forward.
Few journalists have embodied the courage, independence and commitment to truth that @amanpour has demonstrated throughout her extraordinary career.
This week, Christiane announced that she will leave CNN after more than four decades, during which she reported from conflicts and crises around the world and became one of international journalism’s most recognizable voices.
As the Foley Foundation’s 2025 James W. Foley World Press Freedom Award recipient, Christiane has reminded us of a principle at the heart of Jim’s legacy: journalism matters, and telling the truth requires moral courage.
We congratulate Christiane on an extraordinary chapter and look forward to what comes next.

Important Race Day Updates for DC: secure.qgiv.com/event/2026ja…
Three years ago today, Judith and Natalie Raanan came home after being taken hostage during the October 7 attacks and held in Gaza for nearly two weeks. Their release brought enormous relief to their loved ones and hope to other families desperately waiting for news.
Today, we celebrate Judith and Natalie’s freedom and recognize an important truth: coming home is not the end of the journey - it is the beginning of recovery.
The Foley Foundation remains committed to standing with survivors and families as they heal and rebuild their lives.

I had the honor to talk with James Foley early in the Syrian crisis. He had a fundraising campaign and donated an ambulance to support the victims of bombing in Aleppo. I later on saw the ambulance he donated in one of my medical missions in Aleppo. James is a great humanitarian who sacrificed his life for the oppressed. His loss was devastating to all of us. I hope that the criminals who ended his life will face justice one day. I hope that we can build a hospital or school in Aleppo with his name on it to preserve his legacy.
Today, on Jim’s birthday, we remember his courage, compassion, and belief in the dignity of every person. His legacy continues to thrive through the families, individuals freed from captivity, advocates, journalists, partners, and supporters who carry this mission forward.
Next month, we will be sharing an important new chapter in that work – and an open invitation to our entire community to join us.
It started because of Jim. It continues because of you.
