I think that this sort of statement, from a U.K. university @uniofleicester is unprecedented.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

Peter Wright took over his company when every officer had been shot down, and then, near Salerno, went forward alone under fire to clear three German machine gun posts one after another with grenades and a bayonet, opening the way for his men to take a hill that had stopped them cold. He was a Coldstream Guards sergeant major, and he won the Victoria Cross in the hard fighting just after the Salerno landings I told you about today.
Wright was a company sergeant major, the senior non-commissioned officer, in the Coldstream Guards, part of the Allied push inland from the Salerno beachhead in late September 1943. His company was attacking a steep, wooded hill, a strong German position, and it ran into a storm of fire, mortars and the fast-firing German Spandau machine guns raking the slope. In a matter of minutes every single officer in the company was killed or wounded. The attack stalled, the men pinned down on the hillside, leaderless, taking casualties.
Wright took command on his own initiative and refused to let the attack die. He went forward himself, alone, to break the positions that were holding them up. He crawled and worked his way up to the German machine gun posts, and single-handedly he cleared them, three of them in succession, using grenades and his bayonet at close quarters, killing the crews and silencing the guns one after another. With the machine guns knocked out, he reorganized the leaderless company and led it on to take the crest of the hill.
Then, having captured the position, he helped hold it, moving about under fire to organize the defense against the German counterattacks that inevitably followed.
For taking over a shattered, leaderless company and single-handedly clearing the guns that had stopped it, Peter Wright was awarded the Victoria Cross. He survived the war. A guardsman who stepped up when all the officers were down and cleared three machine gun nests by himself so his men could take the hill above Salerno.

Katherine Birbalsingh says it straight: schools teach slavery, but they don’t hear that Britain banned it, enforced it at sea, and paid a fortune to end it.
Katherine Birbalsingh is right. That gap isn’t education it’s a political lesson.
The Arab slave trade barely gets a look in.
That’s not an accident. It’s a story built around guilt, not history.
She’s talking common sense and the truth.
Every school needs a teacher like this. This woke version of the past is damaging children and every classroom needs this kind of honesty and every classroom needs a teacher like Katherine.

I could listen to this all day long.
It’s my last day as social media bloke with British Army Music. Of all the tunes we posted, this is my favourite… Grenade Fired Proper by the Massed Bands on Horse Guards with the bass trombones blowing like they mean it. New job Monday, still in green. #music

Apartheid lives on in Britain, yet we turn a blind eye.
And I fully agree, ending the plight of Muslim women locked away in parts of the UK should be a cause we all get behind.
Sadly, there is no appetite within the British political elite, particularly within @UKLabour, to confront the rising Talibanism in Britain.

Apartheid lives on in the UK: women told to cover their faces, testimony counting for only half in many Sharia courts, oppressed in communities held together by cousin marriage, victims of honour beatings. Why tolerate this intolerance?

Compared with UK’s foreign aid budget, £5M is insignificant. Nepal’s #Gurkhas have served UK loyally for 200 years and we still have thousands of highly-trained Gurkhas in the British Army including Engineers. Why not deploy some to Nepal to provide urgent practical assistance ?
Send Gurkha engineer’s to the Nepalese disaster. It would do a huge amount of good both on the ground and for relationships between our countries. #Gurkhas #ministryofdefence #nepaldissaster

UK to send Nepal £5m for their catastrophic floods. That’s roughly half what UK sends to Pakistan every single month. A thought: If we cannot afford cash how about sending a UK Gurkha battalion or Gurkha Engineer squadron to provide practical assistance to their kinfolk in Nepal?

This morning, the Coldstream Guards at Buckingham Palace performed a tribute to Dolly Parton.
The last time I remember the guards at the palace honoring the memory of an American entertainer was when they paid tribute to Aretha Franklin after she passed away.
Well deserved!

Churches closing. Clergy cut. Parishes merged.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
The future of the Church of England lies where it always has: in the local parish, with a priest who knows their people.
Read our manifesto. Stand for General Synod.
Together, let’s #SaveTheParish

A superb letter which demolishes the archbishop's case. The Church of England will deservedly become an utter irrelevance in this country if it continues in this vein.

I'm not an Anglican, and I'm not a member of the party for which Nick Timothy is an MP. But I do care very deeply about Suffolk's historic churches, I've been documenting them for nearly thirty years and I'm a vice-president of the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust.
The Church of England's plan to use its resources for 'reparations' of this kind seems at once ill-thought out and performative, without any basis in historical reality, a kind of gesture politics that will do few communities any good and will do some communities harm.
The churches that Mr Timothy mentions are national treasures. But more than this, the medieval parish churches of England are the greatest act of witness the Church of England has, a visible sign of its presence in every community, and if they are allowed to wither on the vine they will be symptoms of the Church of England's own withering away.
