Exciting new 3 year post doc opportunity with a talented member of staff (Mike Smith) on a project to work on particle tracking in dense vibrated systems. I would encourage anyone who is interested to apply. jobs.ac.uk/job/DNI776/resear…

The curious case of the spotty snail trail, part 2: this snail travelled at constant speed (it's my week off!) and yet the spotty trail is still there. I can feel an experiment brewing.

Dear @AskNationwide, why are you asking me for details about my salary before you let me access my account/banking app. How is this any of your business?

Dear snail experts of Twi-X. This is Barry*. Does anyone know why its trail is made up of evenly spaced blobs? Is it stopping periodically to sample its environment, or is this some new, snail-based scram jet technology. Should I be worried? Asking on a friend's behalf.

Patterning surfaces with telephone cord blisters. Do you think I could/should be more subtle?

Latest glass blowing session went well. Symmetry is definitely improving!

Our latest experiments were a lot of fun to do! We hole punch inexpensive piezos and suspend membranes across the holes. Piezos drive the membranes and a microphone is used to measure their vibrational spectrum. Peaks tell us about film tension/properties. link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/Phy…

What's also kinda cute about these experiments is the way that we use solvent swelling to isotropically tension the membranes. Works so much better than direct mechanical tensioning!

We also did some simple finite difference simulations of membrane vibration. All the work was done with my PhD student Nathaniel Roberts (not on Twi-X!)
