Before he shipped out to Vietnam, a 19-year-old Marine climbed onto a workbench and set a can of beer on a beam high above the garage. He said he would drink it when he came home. His name was Marcus Stoddard, and everybody called him Marc. He was a mechanic at Henry's Garage in Port Henry, a small town on Lake Champlain in upstate New York. He loved cars, his motorcycle, and eating his lunch on the garage roof, looking out over the lake. In August 1968 he enlisted in the Marines. That December, home on leave before his final training, his friends at the garage threw him a little party and handed out beers. Marc didn't open his. He jumped up on the bench and put the Schaefer can on a girder 12 feet up, next to the windows over the lake. About two months after he arrived in Vietnam, on April 26, 1969, Marc was killed by mortar fire on a hilltop in Quang Tri Province. He was 20. The garage closed that same year, and the fire department moved into part of the building. Over the years, almost everyone forgot about the beer. In May 2016, a group of officials toured the old garage to put it on the National Register of Historic Places. A woman from the Henry family remembered something her mother had told her when she was 14: Marc had left his beer up in the rafters. "It might still be there," she said. They searched the huge, dark building with flashlights for more than an hour. Then one beam of light landed on a faded can, high on a steel girder. The whole group went silent. It had been waiting for him for 47 years. It became the strangest war memorial in Port Henry: one unopened beer, for the boy who never came back for it.

Lenny Kravitz is one of the biggest rock stars in the world. Most people have no idea who he was named after. His uncle, Leonard Kravitz, was a 20-year-old soldier from Brooklyn who died holding off a Chinese assault in Korea, and whose Medal of Honor took more than 60 years to arrive. Leonard grew up in Crown Heights, the younger brother of Sy Kravitz, Lenny's father. In 1951, he was a private first class serving as an assistant machine gunner with Company M, 5th Infantry, 24th Infantry Division. On the night of March 6, 1951, near Yangpyeong, his unit beat off two probing attacks. Then the Chinese came with everything, a massive charge backed by heavy fire. They kept coming no matter how many fell. Early in the fight, Leonard's machine gunner was hit. Leonard took over the gun and started pouring fire into the attackers. The Chinese broke through on the left flank. The position was lost. The order came to pull back. Leonard volunteered to stay. According to accounts, he yelled at his buddies to get the hell out while they still could. As they withdrew, he spotted enemy soldiers moving to cut them off and wiped out the entire group. That drew the Chinese fire straight onto him, exactly what he wanted. His comrades escaped. When American troops retook the position, they found Leonard dead behind his gun, surrounded by enemy dead. The Army gave him the Distinguished Service Cross. His childhood friend from Brooklyn, Mitchel Libman, believed he deserved the Medal of Honor, and that he'd been passed over partly because he was Jewish. Libman spent more than 50 years fighting for it. His campaign pushed Congress to order a review of Jewish and Hispanic veterans who may have been overlooked because of prejudice. In 2012, the decision came down. President Obama personally called Libman to tell him. On March 18, 2014, Leonard Kravitz was awarded the Medal of Honor at the White House. His nephew Lenny was there to honor him. A kid from Brooklyn who died at 20 behind a machine gun. His name lives on today through one of the most famous musicians on earth.

Oct 18, 1931: Thomas Edison died at his home in West Orange, New Jersey, at 84. His best friend Henry Ford wanted his last breath. Edison collected over 1,000 American patents in his lifetime. He gave the world the phonograph, a practical electric light bulb, an electric power system to run it, and the motion picture camera. Maybe his biggest invention was the modern research lab, a team of people working together full-time to invent things. He had been mostly deaf since boyhood. Henry Ford had worked for Edison's electric company as a young engineer, and Edison encouraged him to keep building his gasoline car. They became close friends and went on long camping trips together. When Edison was dying, Ford reportedly asked Edison's son Charles to hold a test tube near his father's mouth to capture his final breath. Charles sealed it. The test tube is still on display at the Henry Ford museum in Michigan. On the night of Edison's funeral, President Herbert Hoover asked Americans to dim their lights for one minute in his honor.
