Rainfall totals are continuing to build across Scotland from Storm Boelo ⚠️
Cluanie Inn, in Ross & Cromarty, has seen 121.6 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours 🌧️
For context, their monthly average rainfall for October is 330.27mm ☔
I’ve seen first-hand the difference the oil and gas industry has made to the Highlands. From Kishorn to Nigg, its legacy is part of our communities.
The Government must ensure Highlanders share in the benefits of Jackdaw, and the employment opportunities it will present.
We must not forget that Dounreay helped keep the lights on in the glens.
We have the site, the skills and the community to host a small modular reactor. The Scottish Government must move beyond outdated policies and unlock Highland energy opportunities.

Having worked at Nigg myself, it was great to attend the opening of Sumitomo Electric’s £350m subsea cable factory - and take part in their traditional Japanese Kagami-biraki ceremony.
A welcome boost for Highland manufacturing and local jobs!⚡️

Cross-party support for new nuclear in Scotland on display in Parliament ⚛️
@mpsusanmurray, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Scotland, led a Westminster Hall debate on the future of nuclear energy in Scotland, highlighting the strong cross-party support for new nuclear.
Contributions highlighted the jobs and investment opportunities the sector could bring, alongside the need for reliable, clean baseload power. @Jamie4North made the case for new nuclear at Scotland’s former nuclear sites, @DLumsden_MP highlighted public support, and @melanie_ward, Minister for Scotland, underlined why nuclear should be part of Scotland’s future, not just its past.
It was fantastic to see figures from the Nuclear Industry Association’s 2026 Civil Nuclear Jobs Map referenced throughout the debate.
Thank you to the MPs who contributed to the lively debate. We will continue to champion new nuclear in Scotland and the opportunities it can deliver for communities across the country.

Dounreay has a licensed site, a skilled workforce and enough local support to bring new nuclear investment and jobs to the Far North.
So what’s stopping it?
The SNP - clinging to outdated policies and obsessing over independence instead of delivering for Scotland.
For people in the Far North of Scotland, investment in infrastructure and local development is particularly vital.
European funds made a real difference to our rural communities. The funding gap now caused by Brexit has done us no good at all.

Highland MP Jamie Stone warns that lost EU funding is threatening rural investment, infrastructure and opportunities for young people, with Scotland facing an estimated £337 million shortfall.

EU funding helped build and improve vital infrastructure across the Highlands. Now, the funding gap caused by Brexit risks holding our communities back.
Our Governments must commit to greater investment in order to tackle depopulation and secure a future for the Far North.
Today I was delighted to return to Parliament, following my heart operation.
I kicked things off by asking the governments of the United Kingdom to work together to tackle the shortage of affordable housing in rural communities.
A good quality home is completely fundamental.
Huge congratulations to Councillor Julie Calder for an awesome victory.
She will be a hard-working and very well-liked local representative - and someone who knows her patch inside out.
Julie Calder (Scottish Liberal Democrats) has been elected to represent Ward 3 Wick and East Caithness on The Highland Council. She joins councillors Raymond Bremner, Andrew Jarvie and Jan McEwan in representing the ward. More here - buff.ly/2LZ79bD

My upcoming surgeries for October ⬇️
As I'm still recovering from operation, my wonderful team will be taking these for me. But rest assured, I'll be back to work soon!

The SNP Government should never have taken their eye off the ball.
We're now 5 years into their national mission to tackle this and it has taken a turn for the worse.
We want to see a national rollout of safer drugs consumption centres - which have been proven to save lives.
I'm back at home after my surgery and I've just been out to do my shopping in Asda. It's really made me appreciate the little things - life is good!
Thank you to Asda for letting me (temporarily) run away with their trolley! 🛒
The SNP are not only blocking greater energy security, they are blocking the creation of well paying highly skilled jobs in the Far North.
47,492 new nuclear jobs in England since 2014. Just 661 in Scotland. That’s the stark reality of the jobs gap created by Scotland’s ban on new nuclear. 👷♀️
⚛️ Without the ban, Scotland’s nuclear workforce could have grown at the same rate as England’s, creating over 5,000 high-skilled, high-paid jobs and valuable training opportunities for the next generation.
Instead, Torness Nuclear Power Station, Scotland’s single most productive, clean and reliable source of electricity, is set to cease generation in 2030. With no nuclear replacement, Scotland will face job losses, and local communities will miss out. 📉
If you want to see the ban on new nuclear lifted, bringing new jobs, billions in investment and energy security to Scotland, write to your MSP today: 📝 parliament.scot/msps/current…

A great number of my constituents expressed their unhappiness with the fact that the bill, as it stood, was fundamentally flawed.
Although recent surgery prevented me attending today's vote, I am deeply grateful that a proxy vote was cast against the bill on my behalf.
