Mike O'Connor helped popularize the internet in Minnesota, and in the mid-90s he registered a handful of one-word .coms.
One he tucked away and never built on: corp.com.
While it sat there, @Microsoft shipped Windows 2000 with "Corp" as the example name for an internal network, and thousands of IT departments kept the default.
Those laptops spent years knocking on corp.com's door, sending passwords and emails to whoever held the domain.
When @briankrebs wrote about it in 2020, Mike decided to sell, mostly because he didn't want his kids inheriting a domain that passively collected Fortune 500 credentials.
Microsoft agreed to buy it, and corp.com now sits in their portfolio…doing nothing.
After 26 years of leaking secrets by default, corp.com is finally taking a long, overdue time-out.

April Domain Spotlight 🌧️
Rain Check? Not on These Domains.
April is a strange month.
One day it’s sunny, the next day it’s raining, and @jarcho is marching around declaring it “rebrand season.”
@rob told him that’s not a real thing. He said neither are April showers, yet here we are.
Still, this time of year always seems to bring new ideas.
Companies rethink their positioning, and suddenly, a better domain starts to sound like a very good move.
We’ve been working with a handful of fresh names lately – clean, flexible, and ready for what’s next. Brian keeps calling them “spring ready.”
We're still not sure what that means, but agree they’re good.
If a refresh has been on your mind, April might be the perfect excuse.
Blame the season. Brian certainly is.

When Jeff Lawson (@jeffiel) stepped down as CEO of Twilio in 2024, he walked away from one of the most important infrastructure companies in tech.
@twilio helped turn telecom infra into software, allowing developers to add messaging, voice, and authentication to products with just a few lines of code. Over time the platform became deeply embedded in the architecture of the web.
Many founders who step away from companies at that stage move toward investing, board roles, or advisory work.
Lawson decided to start a fusion energy company instead.
His new startup is called Inertia, and it has already raised roughly $450 million to pursue one of the most difficult engineering challenges humanity has attempted: building machines capable of generating electricity using controlled nuclear fusion.
Fusion is the reaction that powers the sun. Scientists have understood the physics for decades, but turning that reaction into a practical source of energy on Earth has remained one of the hardest problems in modern science.
Inertia is now working on the engineering systems required to make those reactions repeatable and economically viable.
Before the company launched publicly, the team also secured Inertia.com to anchor the brand, and we were lucky enough to work with them on the deal.
The technical hurdles for Inertia remain substantial, and fusion has historically proven difficult to commercialize. If Lawson and his team succeed, they could unlock an entirely new way to produce energy for the world.

@rob here (founder of Snagged). This is a WILD story about one of the strangest domain deals I’ve ever done…
In early 2025, an AI company we’d worked with before came back with one request: “We need the .com now.”
Their brand name was a person’s first name which, in the domain world, makes securing the matching one-word .com…pretty challenging.
For the sake of this story (and for buyer and seller privacy), I’ll call the domain Geoff.com.
The person who owned it wasn’t an investor. His actual name was Geoff, and he’d owned it for a loooonng time, so yeah, he was emotionally attached.
When I first contacted him, he wasn’t interested in selling.
Eventually he came around, but only if the deal was seven figures…paid in cash.
After months of irrational messages back and forth, he finally agreed to sell it on one condition.
He wanted to be paid in person, all in gold coins.
Yep. Gold frigging coins.
Some days he was “relatively” easy to deal with.
Other days, he’d go completely off the rails.
I learned quickly how to navigate negotiations with him because he warned me not to message him after 4pm…since he’d be drunk.
At one point he said that “if” we met in person, I should bring a gun.
He’d bring his too.
Somehow, after months of this, we got to a real agreement.
Six figures, all gold coins, paid in-person, at EXACTLY the spot price when we’d meet.
Not gonna lie, it was already a sweaty situation, so adding this level of complexity made it even more challenging.
So, I ordered the gold, packed it into my wife’s Lululemon fanny pack, and my partner @Jarcho and I drove 13 hours from New Jersey to rural West Virginia.
We rented a hotel conference room, hired an off-duty cop to sit in the room, and prayed this wasn’t the world’s weirdest catfish.
The next morning, I called an Uber to bring the seller to the hotel.
And the guy who walked in was calm, polite, sober, and weirdly…normal.
We talked about hummingbirds, Costa Rica, and surfing.
Then he handed me an iPad already logged into GoDaddy.
I tried to push the domain and the transfer button didn’t show up, so I manually edited the URL on the iPad.
The transfer page loaded and, after about 500 refreshes, Geoff.com finally hit my account.
I handed him the gold, he stood up, thanked us, and walked out.
It was pretty weird (but oddly satisfying) to think that a deal which took almost a year to get done was finally over…in a matter of minutes.
A day later, the buyer had the domain and the deal was “officially” closed.
Sometimes the only way to buy a domain is patience, persistence…and driving across state lines with six figures in gold coins.

In 1996, WarnerBros. launched a website for a goofy movie where Michael Jordan teamed up with Bugs Bunny.
It should’ve disappeared after the box office run.
Instead, SpaceJam.com became one of the longest-living sites on the internet, and outlasted cultural relics like MySpace and Vine.
For years it just sat there, untouched, until the internet rediscovered it in the 2010s.
What was once throwaway marketing had become a fossil…just like a cave painting on digital wall.
And, it didn’t survive by accident….quiet caretakers at Warner were patching code, fixing breakage, and keeping the lights on.
In 2021, a SpaceJam sequel finally replaced it.
Fans panicked, until the studio revealed the original site had been preserved at spacejam.com/1996.
Just like Back to The Future and Shakepeare, SpaceJam ended up being a prime example of the Lindy Effect: the longer something survives, the more likely it is to keep surviving.
SpaceJam.com outlasted the internet’s fads until survival itself became the punchline.
