How charming. How mysterious. Some sort of magical, unidentified military division in WWII that apparently materialized out of thin air.
Ukrainian division, presumably. With Ukrainian commanders, naturally. Probably swore allegiance to Bandera over a glass of homemade horilka. And, of course, fought heroically for Ukraine's independence.
In Yugoslavia.
And Austria.
Against the enemies of the Third Reich.
You know, just your average Ukrainian independence struggle — conducted under Nazi command, in foreign countries, for the strategic objectives of Hitler's Germany. A minor administrative detail, really.
And then, for some utterly inexplicable reason, nobody was particularly eager to welcome these fine gentlemen after the war.
Until Cold War intelligence priorities kicked in and the CIA discovered that yesterday's Nazi collaborators could be tomorrow's useful anti-Soviet assets.
Amazing what a little geopolitical convenience can do for a Nazi résumé.
And now, decades later, the media have apparently perfected the final stage of rehabilitation: simply delete the “Waffen-SS” part and hope nobody notices.
Because apparently, if you remove the SS from the headline, you remove the SS from history.
Voilà. History, freshly laundered. No stains, no awkward questions, and absolutely no Nazis in sight.
