The harsh reality that some agents probably don't want to face is that if a kid is getting dropped, it's probably warranted based on his SR performance. You can do everything in your power to protect & advise your client, but they have to perform or they won't be compensated.
NEW: College Football GMs face tough calls on commits not living up to summer NIL deals as National Signing Day nears📉 "We just called and said, 'Hey, your number was $200,000, it is down to $75,000. We’re giving you a month. You can either come here or feel free to go somewhere else,'" an ACC GM told @PeteNakos Story: on3.com/news/teams-face-toug…

It's unreasonable for a team to get a whole new season of tape, new information on a player and not recalibrate their valuations. If that 200k player blows up SR yr & Miami calls offering 800k to flip him, the agent probably isn't gonna say "Sorry! His recruitment is shut down."

This does not have to be the norm College football is operating in a professional 🌎 now. That comes with a responsibility for all of us, players and staffs, to approach this like PROS. A quick self-made thread 🧵(first time ever doing this)

IMO the hardest part about taking a job in CFB in this era has got to be trying to build a talented team with 40-60% roster turnover. Being expected to walk in the door with 50+ upgrades or at least competent replacements on the roster is a tall task.
"Physically, we don't look like the teams we're playing." "That's the hand I was dealt. The hand I'm playing is the hand I'm playing, and I'm gonna play it." -HC Alonzo Carter on Sac State's loss to UMass (1/2)

Sac had 50 portal/JC imports. That comes in after losing 15/19 players on O and 18/28 on D over 100 snaps last year. Just a brutal lift trying to replace that in under a month with a new staff.

NEW: In the NIL era, college football players are buying houses near campus. In addition to living in them, athletes use them to put up family members, host teammates, generate rent and serve as long-term investments. wsj.com/real-estate/luxury-h…

One fact of life during the portal era is that #NFL scouts arrive at schools handed lists, sometimes, of 20-30 "prospects" that they must then whittle down. Is there anything that can be done about it? We talked to NFL evaluators to get their takes in the Friday Wrap. Register here: lp.constantcontactpages.com/…

Lots of different angles for representation & many depend on the right player-agent pairing. But the questions to ask - if an agent wants to rep you, what is their value add? What are they doing to protect your interests & your goals? What makes them unique from others?
Good look at the world of “NIL agents.” College athletes and their families need to perform due diligence when considering signing with an agent. I also found the last two paragraphs of the piece to be relevant for college athletics as a whole.

It's so goal dependent for the player, but think about what to worry about relative to your goals. Want to play pro ball? Does your agent think you'll be 3rd string at a P4 or start G6? Do they know the rate of P4 vs G6 draft picks & PFAs? Are they putting you in the right spot?

It's an information game. That's a lot of what is worth paying for. Is your agent seeing 1-2 years in advance how you fit a roster or just shopping for highest bidder? Who do you want in the foxhole when stress is high & tough decisions have to be made?

I think part of issue is that guys getting recruited & committing after JR yr leaves holes for SR yr injuries & fall offs - or big SR yr jumps - to lead to some of the variability w/ young players. Imagine how different draft would look if you picked everyone as JRs not SRs.
Nebraska football GM Patrick Stewart told me there’s a fine line between evaluating potential and rewarding production. Potential looks different at every position because you have to determine whether a player will ever actually reach it. Production is much easier to reward. The challenge is finding the right balance between the two when building Nebraska’s roster. ⬇️ @NextUpBreneman x @PrizePicks

Average path for player at right level of comp for their ability (pre 5 for 5), position dependent of course. Y1 - RS Y2 - 20-40 snaps, ST Y3 - 150-300 snaps, turning the corner Y4 - 400-600 snaps, starter or high rotation Y5 - 500-800 snaps, "the guy" in their unit

If you give a guy a low P4 grade & he plays 0 snaps in 3 yrs at low P4, he's either hurt, has something off mental, or in horrible situation. Grade has to change. Maybe you keep alive for elite athletes at certain long burn positions like TE but prob never gonna click.

John Harbaugh’s 90-10 Rule: If a player does 90% well, acknowledge it 90% of the time. Harp on the 10% constantly, and he will start believing you think he is only 10% good. Even Ray Lewis wanted correction. He also needed the full context. Listen to the full episode on Coach and Coordinator Podcast.

The most valuable pregame signal in football might be whether the head coach decided normal pants would not cut it. I spent an unreasonable amount of time classifying what NFL head coaches wore on the sideline over 15 seasons. I found 64 games where at least one coach wore what I classified as rain pants or weather shell pants. The game finished under the closing total in 48 of them and over in 16. That is 75 percent unders, with those games finishing 5.8 points below the closing number on average. These were closing totals. The market had all week to see the forecast and price the weather. My theory is that rain pants capture the last mile of hyperlocal information. During pregame, the coach gets to stand on the exact field, feel the actual wind and rain, and decide that normal pants are not sufficient. The play by play supports the idea. Teams averaged 50 fewer passing yards and passing EPA collapsed. The next step is simple. Watch the pregame sideline. If you see rain pants, plan on severely downgrading expectations for the passing game and overall scoring. Forecasts are regional. Rain pants are field level.
