Was trying to figure out why I wasn't properly parsing the lightmaps correctly on this wall in the Depths, then realized that it's actually broken in game. nice work lol
Managed to reverse engineer the Dark Souls water shader. They use a deferred target for a water heightmap and construct the displacement normal based on that. Fun stuff.
WebGPU V1 is starting to go live in Chrome. It's a fantastic spec, and a really clean graphics API to program against.... but almost all of it was possible with WebGL. WebGPU won't instantly mean AAA-budget games on the web. There are still major issues with the web for gaming.
You can't download & install 50GB of meshes, textures and sounds into the browser; the best you can do is stream them from the network, but obviously that takes server bandwidth, and only works when the user has good internet. And if you already need that, why not stream a video?
There is a game called Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars for the Wii U. It is, inexplicably, written in HTML and JavaScript, with some custom APIs designed for the Wii U. But that means, with about 1400 lines of shim code, I can do this:
updating my WebGPU backend given today's news and having some flip-Y problems. those who know, know.
As I'm starting up work on my next video, I keep thinking it would be nice to do a collab with some other cool gamedev-adjacent YouTubers... I have no clue who though. Sounds like a ton of fun, but I don't know how to fit it into my video style
