Kansas State @KStateFB long snapper @JaxDuff19 made the trip to Eau Claire, WI to chase perfection.
Jaxson came in struggling with an unbalanced grip, initiating the snap with his arms instead of his body, extending his legs after releasing the ball, and ultimately lacking body control because of how everything was sequencing together.
His biggest frustration was consistently missing high and to the right, but he didn’t realize all of those individual issues were working together to create one larger problem.
We started with his grip. We talked about the cause and effect of hand placement, pressure, and alignment. When you understand why something works, making adjustments becomes much easier. Most long snappers simply experiment until they find something that works, then hope it keeps working. When it doesn’t, they have no framework to fall back on.
Once his hands were in a better position, we shifted our focus to sequencing and flow. Too many long snappers try to initiate the movement by pulling the ball with their arms or driving their elbows. There isn’t another throwing or striking sport where moving the object before the body creates more speed, accuracy, or consistency. We introduced new concepts, drills, and cues that allowed Jaxson to feel what an efficient movement pattern actually looks like.
Athletes don’t make lasting changes because a coach tells them to. They make lasting changes when they understand the principles of movement and experience why those principles work. The laws of movement don’t change for anyone.
The final piece was body control. As his sequence improved, so did his control, but it also helps to know exactly where your body should finish and what those positions should feel like. When you have clear landmarks, consistency becomes much easier to repeat.
You have to break old habits before you can build better ones.
Jaxson now has the tools, the understanding, and the framework to keep improving long after this lesson.
Looking forward to continuing to help Jaxson chase perfection.
