When psychotherapists are more able to inhabit the fullness of themselves, spontaneity may manifest primarily internally, in restraint, listening, and fantasy. We bear, survive, invite, and cultivate beyond words. We communicate our aliveness and presence without needing to talk.

Perhaps the best part of psychoanalysis is having someone sit with you long enough to know your history, yet remain sufficiently at ease with not knowing you that they can encounter you, in every session, as a person who exceeds their understanding.

To say, “it’s all grist for the mill,” versus to inhabit said sensibility; two drastically different processes.

Recent research on affect supports the notion that all affect is communicated, even if only unconsciously. So therapists who believe they can hide their anger, rage, or hatred from their clients are only fooling themselves. — Karen Maroda Psychodynamic Techniques

Winnicott’s “Hate in the Countertransference” acknowledges the parallels on infancy in how the analyst (Mother) experiences hate toward the patient/newborn. Interesting if you are a therapist that unconsciously disavows aggression, and very salient for treatment.

Here is my best attempt to simplify and clarify a Winnicottian perspective on psychopathology, development and therapy. It is highly compatible with neuropsychoanalysis I think, but also ideas from all corners of psychoanalysis (perhaps even French!)
