R.E.M. did something most bands never manage.
From the beginning, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry split the songwriting credits and royalties equally.
No matter who brought in the lyric, riff, or starting idea, it belonged to all four of them.
After thirty-one years, they ended R.E.M. together. No messy public breakup. No farewell tour.
Michael Stipe later said they remained "dear friends."
Maybe treating the band as four equal partners is why they stayed one.
