I knew rugby was physical. What I, and many former players, didn’t understand were the long-term risks to our brains, or that we’d be left without proper neurological support after retirement. It’s about better leadership, better protocols, and protecting the next generation.
In 2023 ex Great Britain rugby league star Josh Jones retired due to concussion-related issues, aged just 30.

Rugby League #concussion nightmare:
Eli Katoa was cleared by Tonga docs after this hit pregame & cleared a 2nd sideline eval in the first half.
He was finally pulled after a 3rd bad hit, suffered a seizure & required emergency brain surgery for a bleed.

A study into grassroots rugby concussion found players’ brains are still affected after being cleared to play.
Led by Dr Ben Jones of @SRES_UoE, the study found seven out of eight concussed players still had abnormal brain responses 25 days after injury.

Great to see the support local MPs are showing towards neurodegenerative diseases in professional football, I hope they show the same support for current and former Rugby players 👏🏻

My friends and family, After a challenging few months I wanted to share that I have been diagnosed with stage 2 Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). 1/2.
I also want to thank St.Helens, Exeter, Salford, Hull & Huddersfield for giving me the opportunity to represent them. Rugby League is all I’ve ever known, it has given so many wonderful highs and allowed me to achieve my dream.
Always love ❤️
Josh
To my family and friends, thank you for your continued love and sacrifices throughout my professional career. The moments we have shared will stay with me forever!
