A new week of competing priorities has me returning to The Education Avengersāand the people whose stories remind me what deserves our attention, and why.
āThey did not plan to make a heroic stand. They set out to solve problems that systems designed to help children had failed to address. They do not spend their time scornful of what is broken. They build what works. They reject the lies that the poor cannot learn, that dropouts are failures, that some children are simply ābad,ā or that children born differently should be accommodated but never challenged.
āThey believe the best of people. They would rather build than fight for rhetorical victories.
āWe need them in our communities.
āWe need them in our schools.
āWe need them in our conversations, our institutions, and our lives.ā
āBefore they were Avengers, they were simply people who could no longer look away. They simply decided that our young people were worth it.ā

Today is Columbus Day, and this year it falls on October 12, the very date Christopher Columbus reached the Americas in 1492.
As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, NIAF reflects on the voyage that came nearly three centuries before the nationās founding. We believe Columbusā courageous journey was the catalyst for more than 500 years of immigration to the Americas by people from every corner of the Earth, all seeking a better life for their families. For this reason, Columbus Day belongs not only to Italian Americans, but to all Americans.
The holiday also carries its own history for our community. President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed the first national observance in 1892, one year after 11 Italian immigrants were lynched in New Orleans. For generations since, it has been a day of recognition for the Italian Americans who helped build this country.
